ive driven afriend's 330CI as well as the new E90 330i at taste of Lexus earlier this year, its not nearly as fast as my car. not even close. BMWs are not underated at all, nor are they overated.
BMW often uses the hoserpower at the wheels, versus the crank. So you'd be comparing 225 to like 335. Of course torque is a better performance measure, and the curves are even more important.

I agree. not quite at the wheel, but pretty close i think. similar to lexus/toyota new rating system that's more standardize. That's why the IS350 is rated at 300HP instead of the 350 that it was originally projected to make.

its just rated by the new SAE NET standard... toyota and honda have a history of overating their cars. After the industrial wide switch to the SAE NET standard many cars went down in hp. Some expamples would be, Avalon (with the is350 engine) went down to 268 from 280, Camry v6/lexus ES went down to 210 from 230. acura TL went down to 258 from 270. Mazda RX8 went down to 232 from 238.
SAE net rating is still no where close to whp. From what Ive read on IS forum, the IS350 dynos around 240-250whp

It still makes the same quarter mile times (on paper) as we do, so if their motor would be rated at 350 vs my 298, they must have some significant loses. Weight isnt a factor between our cars either.

I can't believe the rx-8 only went down 6HP? I thought those things were super overated. The delta should be greater, as appose to a small margin for those manufacturer that underate their powers (like BMW). I guess Mazda gave up on the 8 cuz they have a new 3 coming out with a smaller version of the new mazdaspeed 6 engine. That's suppose to push 250 HP from a 2.3 liter turbo 4, not sure if it's awd also or not. They must be trying hard to get people to forget about the rx-8 by making all these newer family/economy sedan more powerful than their sportcar.
