It all depends on where you shop and what you are looking for. I have a specific jeweler and have used him for the past 7 years for all my occasions ie Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Christmas, Birthdays. I'd say find an old jeweler who is experienced and he will work a deal out with you. I paid 2500.00 for an engagement ring that had a platinum band and 1 1/2 carats. Shop around though you can always get different prices but also you should know your quality.

^good call.

also take into considseration warranty. Most big name jewelers have a slight edge in that you can take the ring in for repair/refinishing/resize all under warranty.

If you want a true diamond hunting experience, go to the diamond district in NY just to get schooled on diamonds. There is more to a diamond than the 4 c's. Especially depending on what cut you get. I didnt by there though because it felt shady lol, but I did learn a lot.

http://www.bluenile.com/ good site for learning some basics...

kind of a crappy pic...but I had this engagement ring custom made. (total cost was $7300) Solid platinum. 1.03ct. princess cut ( Color: D, Clarity: VVS2, Cut: Ideal ) The stinkin rock is what set me back... $5300. I probably could've got a larger diamond with less clarity etc... but my finace' has very petite hands and I wanted to get the highest quality rock I could afford.

The matching wedding band is being made right now and will have 3 diamond baguettes that match the engagement ring. ($2000)

LOL, my wedding band is titanium and only cost $60!!! HAHA WTF. So I bought my self a matching titanium HKS exhaust for my own lil wedding present to myself...

on a side note: i proposed at night on the beach in Oahu while on vacation...I knew it would be dark outside, so I had my jeweler hook me up with the LED ring box. Had a very nice effect when I whipped it out. I highly recommend it.

+1, I agree with Cashio, it really depends a lot on the girl. Her friend's also play a huge role. My cousin just got married in July of 06, and he got BENT (around the 42k area) on the ring because of the rocks that her friends were wearing. I think that a good average size will be 1.5 carats, and they vary huge in price depending on things like clarity and cut.

^^true dat so i guess whomever the guy is who will buy your ring lek, must first hang out w/ your other friends to see what size they have so he can buy you one accordingly

and FYI guys, I would not want to marry a girl who compares herself with her friends, or values her worth based on what her friends have (ring size). thats prob. the most shallow thing I've ever heard of...
