the main point i'm making is that the 50% statistic is misleading
just go this for my girl...
specs:
1.22 C round brilliant
F color
VVS2
Triple X (excellent cut grade, polish, and symmetry)
setting - platinum with 0.45C total 18 diamonds around.
14K after tax...good thing she said yes. LOL

Whatever you do, take your time. No need to rush. I spent several months searching before I stumbled upon the ring that I was willing to spend moolah on.
Defintely helps to look at it directly. Internet shopping is not the way to go for a diamond.
Don't forget to ask for "discounts", etc. I was able to knock off about 2 grand off just buy talking with the guy.
Another thing, check with your Insurance company to find out how much a rider would cost to cover it. Once I purchased mine, I had it covered under my policy. Once I gave it to her, we transferred it to her insurance policy.

J/k
buy what you can afford. It doesn't make sense to go broke over a ring, and if she doesn't like what you can afford, you better start thinking about how the marriage will be.
Most marriages fail due to financial reasons!

I got her a small quarter carat engagement ring a few years ago, it had G clarity I believe, almost flawless, got it for about 700 bucks. then for our wedding, i got her a 1.75 carat with about a quarter smaller stones around the band, total weight 2.something. the clarity wasnt the best, but she wanted a big one, put me back 3 Gs... I'll take some pictures
2 ideas in here I really like are:
get her something small but nice....
and
getting her a custom ring with sapphires...
gotta look into these. I dont really want to spend too much on a ring. thats the truth.

My other thought is..to most of us, this is a suprised because either (1) you been hiding this relationship from us for a while or (2) this hasn't been that long of a relationship. if it's the later, you should slow down, you don't want to be part of the statistic..ya know? haha
