Worth going to small claims?

On the 9th I was at Bobby Van's, think Ruth Chris. Long story short, the coat check lost my jacket (retail value when purchased ~$500). Manager said to wait a couple days so it could be returned by whoever accidentally took it, he'll pay if it doesn't come back. I call on the 11th, he says he'll call back in a couple more days. He doesn't call, I call back on the 18th. He says he's going to Macy's to compare prices (wtf) and he'll get me a gift card, and call back by the 20th. I told him how much I got it for (sale) but if he found any at Macys, they would be far more than that.

I think he's bull****ting me. Pushing it off as long as possible with the hopes that after Xmas, it will have been 3 weeks, and it'd be harder for me to do anything like sue. Maybe even say he doesn't remember me.

I don't know how much a jacket depreciates, but is this the type of thing I can quickly get through small claims court? It was in DC btw.

You won't get anywhere over the phone go down there in person and if you have a reciept show him. People will always play phone tag with you until your face to face and show them you mean business

I wasn't the one who paid. Some guy making like $500K paid for a whole group of us. I don't know him though, I was a guest of one of his guests.

It's only $5 to file a claim in DC small claims court if you're suing for $500 or less. So this will probably be happening. I'm sure the manager/owner will love to sit in court all day.

I've got, a receipt for my jacket, phone bill with all the calls I've made to them, at least one witness (there were 3 or 4 there when the coat check said they lost it that I could track down), and I could probably get a receipt for dinner to say I was there. Is that enough?

Write a demand letter to the manager, describing the details of the situation and all of your discussions to date. In the letter, demand reimbursement within 5 business days of his receipt (which would be evidenced by tracking info). This will not only establish a record (in case you ever do to small claims court), but will also show the manager that you're serious and aren't going to just forget about it.

I called back prepared to state my intentions after giving one last chance to fix the situation, and he said I'll be getting reimbursed. I'll have everything else ready in case he doesn't follow through.
