I was very, very impressed that something so comfortable could get around the track so well and slide so controllably. The G37 is a nice track car.

As far as sleeper track cars go, the G37 does pretty well. Great luxury daily driver, but also really fun on the track with good predictable handling at the limit and sharp steering without too many mods needed. Reminded me a lot of my old E46 M3 and that was one of my favorite RWD cars. Nice S2000 by the way.

The car went from street to track day to race car with me and I had some mods that bumped the car out of STE and PTC but the engine was stock. It held the NASA TTR track record at Summit Point Main for about three years. It was a handling monster and I lived 30 minutes from the track so I lived there.

There's a 2009 G37 S 6-speed about 80 miles from me that I'm planning to go see with cash in hand.

Nice! Are you looking at a sedan or a coupe G37S? I think you will really like the car. It is a good all around luxury performance car with real capability on the track. It does not take much work to make them fast, but know there will always be faster cars.

It has the same brakes, suspension, chassis, engine, and transmission as the 370Z so you have a good start. I would get an oil cooler for the track and obviously some high temp fluid, sticky brake pads, and tires. You can improve the shifting a lot with a Jsolo clutch return spring and Z1 tranny mount. An exhaust will be nice to help you hear when to shift (and this engine sounds great opened up). A lot of guys swear by sway bars. I have them, but honestly I think the Tein Basis coilovers make a bigger difference. That should be enough to get you started...

I'm looking for an S coupe. At what ambient temperature does the limp mode become probable when really pushing the car on track with good street tires?

Good question. It does not take much. I was doing a simple touring event at Road America in my '11 370Z (the year before they came with OEM oil coolers) and my oil temps started rising quickly after 25-30min on the track. Keep in mind this was not a track day so speeds were kept relatively low (115-120 tops) and I was probably only driving at 5/10's-6/10's.

I would get an oil cooler if I were you and look at it as good insurance. I actually boiled the power steering fluid at the last track day I was at because the track was so technical and short. I don't think you would have that problem on most tracks. Maybe at an autocross.

I have a 25 row Stillen oil cooler and had no issues on the same track that boiled the steering fluid. Good oil cooler, but bad instructions and tech support. Throw the instructions out and wing it or contact me if you have issues. Easy overall to install.

I ran a track day at Summit Point Main at the end of last season. I have a coupe with a Stillen supercharger. As far as cooling mods, I just had a CSF radiator, Z1 34 row Setrab oil cooler, and an upgraded heat exchanger for the air to water intercooler. My brakes were Carbotech XP 12(f)/10(r), and Motul RBF 660 fluid. Otherwise, stock block/braking system. I was just about touching 140 at the end of the main straight, and keeping up with Miatas in the back S's in the advanced group. My tires are trash once they get some temp in them (Hankook V12's that came with the wheels), so I couldn't push any harder, but I had no problems handling the temps all day.

I highly highly recommend G-Force COMP-2's. I only have the A/S (all seasons) version and they grip for days, I cant even imagine how the sport versions perform. Also, best tires I have ever ran in the rain.

Good news on the oil cooler at a bigger track. I just did a simple touring event at Road America the other weekend and I did not have any issues like I did in my 370Z doing the same thing a few years ago. Keep in mind, this is not a full out track day, but spending more time on the track with higher temps. So the oil cooler seems to be doing its job so far.
