Raced my 08 G37s vs 12 IPL 1/4
I too learned the hard way... This car is nice but bolt ons give it NO power. It's a wate of thousands. I'm sorry I made that mistake.
R2C intakes + Berk HFC + Fast Intention CBE + UpRev Tune = 299whp

This allows the 7AT to accelerate much quicker out of the gate when traction is not an issue.
Wish i can see a video of the 5at vs 7at in a straight line dragging...
that might be true but when i test drove the 7at i was disappointed when cruising at 60mph in 5-6-7th gear and then flooring it and feeling it slowly in my mind shift through each gear. my 5at goes straight to the gear with little delay and they goes. i went with the 5at for that reason. i also "heard" the 5at is a stronger tranny but to those reading please dont get up and arms about that

What about any difference from a standstill? Didn't the lower gearing in the 7at feel noticeably quicker or did the extra shifting negate any possible speed gains?
the 7at's first gear would prolly beat the 5at off the line but i dont think by a noticable amount. also in a race to say 0-130 i would think the advantage would go to te 5at because it wont shift as much but thats my guess

Shorter gears like in 7AT should be better than 5AT longer gears thru a quarter mile. The whole concept of more gears (and/or Variable transmissions) is to keep the engine in the max power band as long as possible and improve MPGs while cruising. And since these are autos and shift so quick you are not losing time if they shift one more time vs 5AT thru the quarter.
From a roll it just depends on the speed and where you are in the power band for that gear. If I floor my G37 at say 50mph and it's 3rd gear 4k RPM vs 2nd gear in 5AT at 5k RPM I'd expect the 5AT to get a little jump as its more in the power band. That might reverse at say 60 if 7AT is now in a sweeter spot in 3rd vs 5AT that's now at the low end of 3rd.
Just a lot of factors here to consider.

^^^^ True, but if they did a run on the quarter mile i think the 7AT would need to shift twice more than the 5AT, i dont see how thats not going to make a difference in time.
Although i do wonder if Infiniti updated the 7AT ECU to be faster at shifting than the 5AT. I also wonder if the 5AT in the G37 has been updated from the same 5AT used in the older G35's.
I think all these factors play in when comparing these two trannies with everything else being equal between both cars.

Has anyone driven the 1/4 mile in a 7at? If so, does the trans accually shift 7 times within the 1/4 mile? Remember, these trannys are built for practice "street" performance/ drivability/ fuel mileage, not for drag racing. That being said, I think you will pass the 1/4 mile trap, b4 it shifts into the highest gear. I don't know this, as my car is a 5at, and shifts into high gear right as i pass through the gate. I'm not trying to stir up the pot, just looking for the answer. The only experience with a 7at was at the dealer, test driving a brand new coupe, while being yelled at by the salesman in the back seat to slow down cuz his head was hitting the back window hard over bumps, and while drifting... poor guy, I did apologize!
