Reset the ECU

II have been reading a lot of threads about people resetting the ECU after adding a new mod to the car. This does help the car learn the new mod better than if you were to just install the mod and let the ECU re-adjust over time, but also does not make the car re-adjust to the mods instantly like some people may think.

When you simply reset the ECU and start driving the car with the new mods on it, it will not learn the mod right away. It will take much more than 50-100 miles for the car to “learn” and change for the new part(s). From what I know about the G35 (guess it would be the same for the G37) the car will take about 1,.000 miles to really learn the mod and change to make the mod work better with the car. When you put the mod on and do not reset the ECU you may actually be better off because the car is already adjusted to the way you drive and if you have a 5AT, the transmission is used to your sift pattern. If you reset the ECU after a new mod is installed you are only letting the ECU go back to the way the car was when you first picked it up. When this topic was discussed on G35 driver some people felt that resetting the ECU made the car adapt to the mods quicker, but it will still take 1,000 miles or more for you to really feel the affects. Also for those with the 5AT, when you reset your ECU then car will have to “re-learn” the shift pattern and you’re driving habits so it might feel slower.

I’m not trying to say that resetting the ECU is bad, but at the same time it is not going to make a HUGE difference in the 50 miles or so that people are driving before they dyno. The only real way to make the ECU adapt to the new mods is to drive it, for the G35 people have said 1,000 miles is the golden number, I would assume it would be the same for the G37.
