Muffler shop took my cats

I recently installed my fast intentions resonated test pipes at my local muffler shop. It cost $100 and 2 hours to install. When I asked the guy if I could keep my cats in case I want to put them back in he told me that was illegal and part of the "$100 deal". Then I asked him how much it would be for the labor and keeping my cats. He told me that was a violation and he couldn't do it. Doesn't the muffler shop profit off of taking my cats due to rare metals such as platinum and rhodium? Aren't oem cats for my vehicle around $600? Can they legally take my cats even if I request to keep them?

I put z1 HFC and I got to keep my cats and every stock bolt as well. I don't think it's LEGAL. I paid 120$ for mine. I'm in California.

Edit. MEANT TO SAY I DONT THINK IT IS LEGAL.

They can't legally keep the parts. Call the cops on them and contact the Better Business Bureau. Just make sure to tell the authorities they were putting test pipes on your track car.

You need to go back to the shop. Talk to the manager and tell him you will be contacting the police, writing reviews, and contacting the bbb. It's your car. For all they know you were taking in a track car and removing the cats.

They have probably already sold your cats tbh.

Keep us posted.

At this point your cats are gone. But it is not illegal for you to get your stuff back. I agree you should call the cops

Dang, I hate to see people get taken advantage of. On one hand you got a killer deal on the install, most people pay several times that. On the other hand, I would've laughed in his face and went back there and grabbed them myself. Don't let people walk on you bro!

Appreciate the responses

Thanks for all your input guys. I knew something was up when they made vague excuses to keep my cats. Luckily I got them installed late on Friday and they are closed over the weekend, so hopefully they are not sold. I will go to the shop early Monday morning to talk to the manager. Good thing Florida doesn't have smog inspections so if they do refuse I'll be okay.

Btw

The FI resonated test pipes with muffler delete on the stock exhaust sounds extremely aggressive and high pitched. Every shift can be heard for at least a mile away. I'm planning on putting an axleback with a stock muffler because my neighbors really hate me

Some states, it is illegal to work on a car without cats.. most muffler shops should have a sign on the front door or window stating this.

Now, he took you... go get your ish back, he can't legally hold them. As they are your parts

Tell them to show you the statute in the law book that said it's illegal to give you your parts back or you will contact the authorities and report them for theft of property.

Say you want them back and you are using your car for track or off road purpose. In this case, they can't take them away since you aren't using for road use. And then once you get them drive away and smile. Or come in a different car.

Another reason they could "keeping" them is if they damaged it and don't want to fess up.

I had a shop cut my stock cat in half, without my permission, because they could not loosen the demon bolt from the top.

Or maybe they're just ****s and sold them for profit?

This morning, I took y'alls advice and came in a different vehicle to ask for my cats back. He was very rude and sarcastic telling me that he took my cats to save me from carbon monoxide. Then he told me to hold on, went outside for a bit, and came back in with his fake enthusiastic, bussinesslike attitude. He told me that the cats cores have already been stripped and he would need to track them if I wanted them back, even though they are closed over the weekend and I came as soon as they opened. He continued to tell me that my cats were worth $25 and illegal to put back on. Also, the day after the install, my check engine light came on. My FI test pipes guarantee no CEL with the O2 bungs. I'm assuming these idiots used an air impact gun and hammered away to install my pipes, thus damaging the sensors. He told me that he would have to charge me $50 to try to fix the CEL, saying that he would have to order nonfoulers. I told him my pipes guarantee no cel and he continued to disagree, saying that there are secondary oxygen sensors or whatever. At this point I'm pretty pissed and debating on what to do. I will be taking my car to a proper exhaust shop tomorrow to find out what I can do about the CEL. As for the cats, I might go to the junkyard to look for a parting out/totaled g37 if the time does come. I'm trying hard to decide if I want to file a police report or not. I doubt they're actually tracking my cats; they're probably in the garage right now.
