Exhaust Set Up Questions
Exhaust Set Up Questions
Don't know too much about exhaust systems. But let me try to get this straight, please don't laugh
The exhaust system is made up of the Mufflers, Cats, and the pipe (whether H,Y or what have you). correct? So when I see sigs of people having a Borla Catback Exhaust system, and then Berk HFCs for example, did their Borla COME with HFCs and they just replaced them? Or did the Borla not include HFCs?

Extremely confused here. So would something like this be the FULL exhaust system? http://www.stillen.com/product.asp?i...odel=G37%202DR
Buy one system? Or mix and match (Berk pipes, HFCs and Greddy mufflers for example). I know I'm a noob
, just very confused haha.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Most of the systems can be mixed and matched for the axle back and y-pipes, but full systems like FI or Borla can have pieces switched out, they are already complete. The HFC are always a seperate purchase. No systems come pass the cat's, so regardless of if you get a full system from Borla or FI, you'll always need to get the HFC seperately. Even if you mix and match a greddy or tanabe system with a different Y-pipe, you'll still need to purchase the HFC's, if you were intending to replace the ENTIRE exhaust system. Don't forget headers too if you're really talking about a full complete exhaust swap.
I'm not knowledgeable about exhaust systems either but I can help what I know. Also credit to ucla_bruin for all these useful information (he taught me)
Here is the layout of our cars:
engine > header > cats or HFC > y pipe > mid pipe >tail pipe > muffler > tip
Cat-back exhaust system means it will replace all stock components AFTER stock cats. Hence, Cat-back.
For example FI exhaust is a Cat-back:
header > cats or HFC > FI exhaust (which includes y pipe, mid pipe, tail pipe, muffler, tip)
Greddy Ti-C is a y-back, meaning full exhaust from the y-pipe back to the end
Tanabe is an axle-back, means full exhaust from the rear axle back to the end, or in order words, it's just a muffler + tips.
Fujitsubo is an axle-back, same as Tanabe.

I don't know of any exhaust system that is Header-back.. meaning inclusive of cats or HFC.. People replace the stock cats by going HFC. Berks HFC is the best out there for our cars.

Hope it helps
