Bad News Regarding The Updated Muffler

It rattles too...

Yes I called Infiniti Consumer Affairs to see if they could expedite the new muffler to replace the old one on my car.

I thought that I had the older muffler on my car. However I was loooking at the wrong work order when I made that assumption. I have two work orders for muffler replacement within a week of each other.

So I found my most recent work order which has the new part number 20100-JL01B. And guess what - it rattles everytime I crank my car after it has been sitting for a while.

So now the dealer wants to test to see whether my HFCs may be causing the problem. I am not sure if I want to go through all of that since I know that the muffler is broken and the problem will continue even with placing the OEM cats back on the car- unless of course they want to put my oem cats and a new muffler on to see if the problem reoccurs.

I may just not fool with it and wait for my aftermarket mufflers. At any rate- for those of you with the new JL01B design- just wait 3 - 4 weeks and ... well... my guess is that we will see you in this thread

That sucks! I'm getting mine replaced tomorrow. I'm just going to not bother with this issue anymore and take the plunge and get my custom system finished.

You should be happy they're replacing these for you considering you have HFC's. It's possible they are what's causing the issue.

COnsidering th ehistory of this problem I have to respond-Nonesense! While normally I might agree that it may be possible for HFCs to allow more pressure and thus cause a muffler to malfunction because it is getting more pressure than normal, this issue is extremely well document on so many cars that don't even have HFCs. This issue started with my car before I installed my HFCs. So although cooperative, I shouldn't be happy or satisfied with anything at this point.

I might even be more willing to accept that argument if I had replaced, in addition to my cats, my Y pipe or mid pipe. But as it's set up now it's only going to allow but so much exhaust through.

I understand that the HFC's might not be causing it but, from the dealers perspective....that's a pretty good judgment call on their part to honor the issue. That's just me. I know we've all seen and heard stories of the dealer denying warranty for the most ridiculous things.

Ya I think that if the issue wasn't so widespread dealers might be denying the claim with aftermarket cats but considerign that it is they are honoring them.

My dealer is mod freindly though. The service manager has a modded out vehicle himself so he understands that an aftermarket part would have to be proved without a doubt to ahave caused the problem before denying a warranty claim. I'm not so much mad at my dealer as I am at Infiniti. My dealer has indeed bent over backwards to accomodate me on this issue.

I took my G37 in once for the rattle sound while idleing and the dealer just "adjusted some of the heat shielding" which did nothing and obviously I still have the issue. I've been waiting to see if they have a fix before I take my G in to service again, and obviously there still isn't a fix.

I noticed that whenever i turn my car off, it TICKS like crazy, for at least 30second to a minute... I am pretty sure its coming from under the car and not the engine. The sound is identical to the rattle i hear when the car is idleing.

My question is, is it possible that the metal used on the exhaust is some really cheap, lightweight aluminum that is constantly heating up/cooling even when the car is running causing the ticking/rattle.

Im just thinking this because I've never heard a car tick so much after shutting it off as my G37, and the two sounds are so similar.
