Bad News Regarding The Updated Muffler
My car is a about 3 months old (my XM just expired) and i've got just about 1,500 miles on it and i guess one of 2 things is going on:
1. either i'm not noticing the muffle rattle
2. I got lucky and my muffler isnt defective like so many out there.
Can someone tell me exactly what i should be listening for? Usually i've got my music up pretty loud so that could be why i'm not hearing any muffler problems (assuming I even have any)

I took my G37 in once for the rattle sound while idleing and the dealer just "adjusted some of the heat shielding" which did nothing and obviously I still have the issue. I've been waiting to see if they have a fix before I take my G in to service again, and obviously there still isn't a fix.
I noticed that whenever i turn my car off, it TICKS like crazy, for at least 30second to a minute... I am pretty sure its coming from under the car and not the engine. The sound is identical to the rattle i hear when the car is idleing.
My question is, is it possible that the metal used on the exhaust is some really cheap, lightweight aluminum that is constantly heating up/cooling even when the car is running causing the ticking/rattle.
Im just thinking this because I've never heard a car tick so much after shutting it off as my G37, and the two sounds are so similar.

The ticking that you hear when you cut the car off is from the expansion and contracting of hot metal- likely heat shields and manifold (just a guess).
The imfamous rattling from the muffler is from broken or worn our baffles in the muffler.

I have an appointment for Tuesday. They are removing my high flow cats and placing my OEMs back on and then testing to see if the problem returns.
I'm not sure how we are going to go about all of this but I guess I will be the ginny-pig for now since Infiniti agreed to do this to no expense to me if they find that after removing the HFCs the rattle is still there after putting on my OEM cats.
If the rattle is still there I assume that they will replace the muffler and put my HFCs back on if thats what I want to do, or let me drive for a while with the OEM setup to see if the rattle comes back. I may just keep the HFCs off until my Tanabe mufflers arrive.

Here is the issue...
I have the same problem. I don't have HFC's or any mods. I'm going on my third muffler right now. Same stuff, rattles and all.
I was thinking... Who would make something that is very cheap, made of inferior materials, breaks often, etc. Who would a company like Nissan go to to save the most money up front. China! Give yourself a pat on the back if you guessed right.
Now read this article:
http://english.people.com.cn/90001/9...4/6382165.html
"The recall is due to problems in the muffler welding production process. Some cars did not have a particular type of wire bonder, resulting in corrosion-prone welding parts which crack and make an abnormal sound..."
I know it doesn't mention our cars specifically but is does mention the same issue. If Nissan outsourced Maxima mufflers, why wouldn't they do it for the rest of their cars? So, it seems that we are pimping Dongfeng mufflers on our G37's. It might be incorrect, but I think it is correct. I think the boys from Nissan wanted to cut some corners and save a few bucks in an area they didn't think mattered. Well, that one might have come back and bit them in the ***. So, next time somebody asks, "What kind of exhaust is that? Is it Greddy, HKS, or FI?" You can reply, "No man that's the Dongfeng Sport exhaust! Sounds hot right?"

lol! Wow interesting find... Dongfeng Mufflers huh? Hmmm.... I guess I must not have a Dongfeng considering I've never gotten the rattle... and I'm at 9200 miles already...

or Injen exhaust especially for those of us that want to brand match with the intake...
i really think u got a factory defect freak manim sorry about that seems u have severe issues that go beyond the typical ones, good luck lemoning! are u still getting a G37 after? you can probably get a newer build by now...
Trader J you're hilarious...i think what u found might be on the dot...not only do those chinamen prob F up small standard exhausts, Nissan prob did one worse and tried to give them specs on a premium/sports exhaust which i would imagine needs more attention to engineering and details.....
PS
I meant chinamen as synonymous with Chinese people. not to be confused with the semi-derogatory term
dont get too excited u just have a better built Dongfeng muffler...inferior factories like these in China are known to have inconsistent build quality so out of every 100 mufflers made, 70 may be up to par, 20 with moderate issues or vulnerable to issues and 10 that end up sounding like a tin can.
1.muffler problem..
lets stop wasting time replacing muffler which will only last 1-2weeks and
let infiniti know that g37mufflers are fu#K the up.... let them solve the problem.. some f*cking HOW... im pissed it was my 3rd muffler and it rattle..
2.surge..
dealer keep FU##ing saying they have to duplicate the issue... but guess
my car doesn't surge in dealer....
i have backache now.. because of the very dangerous annoying surge....
in additional to all these problem my car makes squeaking sound or breaking sound from the roof and the back whenever theres slope
LETS LEMON our DAMN CAR... i contacted lemon lawyer... and they ll give me the call tomorrow...
i hate my car now... hope i can lemon it...

It mentioned a Teana being am Aussie Maxima in another article. Not quite the same but close. Looks kind of like a Q45 perhaps. The point is that Nissan has some mufflers made in China that are going bad.
I might be wrong, but who knows? I do know that these mufflers suck (repeatedly) and if I had to pick a random country capable of manufacturing such excellence, I would choose China. They can't even make dog food right without killing our pets.

When you start up, you will hear rattling sound(sounds like metal screws/loose license plate from very loud stereo system)
Very distinct rattle, had 4 mufflers done before problem went away.
It's back (muffler sound) & since then I already ordered a new cat back & hfc's from FI.
