Bad Ballast?

So I have had a headlight Issue on my 2010 G37 coupe. For a while now my low beam head light has been turning off by itself lately, & I have to turn the headlight off & on to get it on again which is very annoying. I noticed that it turns off on bumps, switching into gears. I decided to change the bulb & as I was holding the igniter in my hand it completely went off. I put in the old bulb & now the headlight won’t even turn on at all. The parking light & fog light still works. Is my ballast going nuts or is my fuse bad?

More than likely the ballast is on it's way out.

Read this thread. While your symptoms are not identical, the diagnostic procedure I mentioned in Post #4 applies.

The diagnostic procedure does make sense. What stuns me most is that I didn’t even get to change out the bulb before it finally died out. I had just pulled out the igniter & bam, no more power again. Even with the oem bulb.

HID ballasts are pretty durable and reliable. But it has been my experience that once they show signs of giving up, the end comes fast.

So I ended up changing my ballast, & the aftermarket HiD bulb worked again, although it still had the same flickering issue that had initially drove me to attempt to put the original bulb back on in the first place. (all before the headlight officially went out). I put the OEM bulb back on & now it’s working good as new. New Ballast + OEM HID Bulb. No problems. Went ahead & put the OEM bulb back on the other side as well. Seems as if it was a combination of both the Passenger ballast & aftermarket bulb. CLASSIC case of OEM>Cheap Quality. Aftermarket.

Glad you got it sorted and working right. Sadly, not all HID ballasts and bulbs are created equal- not even counting the cheap, Chinese knockoffs.

Thanks for the update!
