I know this has been beating down like Hillary at a Trump debate, but I need a serious tech question answered. I have seen folks that have stated they will run a larger M56 model filter from the M56 OEM filter(152089E01A) Infinity on the G. According to my friend at work, they have different properties and is adjusted in accordance with pressure. The M56 filter is running a 17psi while the oil pressure rated for the M56 is at 14psi. The internal valve is different, Im not really sure if running this is a good idea. Thoughts if someone has any spec information on this topic. I need to order a filter soon and wanted to make sure i can do this without any ill effects.

 

I just installed an M56 filter. Since oil pressure at idle is greater than the internal relief, there is nothing to worry about. You'd get a low oil pressure light if the filter valve closed.

 

Been running the 4.5/5.6liter V8 filters since 08, great UOAs!

The oil filter pressure valve rating determines when the oil filter is bypassed and not used. This prevents the oil filter from exploding.

If the rating is 14 psi, then when there is 14 psi pressure difference from the input to output of the oil filter, it is bypassed an not used. Unfiltered oil enters the engine.

Nope, you will have no idea when the filter is in bypass mode. When you start you car at very cold temps, it is bypassing the oil filter. Very cold VQ37s will have oil pressure > 120 PSI at idle and the filter is bypassed until the oil is warmed up.

The low oil pressure light only turns on when we have less than 4-5 PSI oil pressure in the engine. We can have sufficient oil pressure with the oil filter in bypass mode.

There is no correlation between oil filters and a UOA. UOA measure wear elements in the oil, which the oil filter does not have the ability to filter out. Items like silicon, aluminium, iron, nickel, etc.

If your UOA shows a particle size report, then you can draw conclusions on how well the oil filter is performing. After all, that is their job: Filtering out particles, not wear elements.

 

I've had only a couple of cars with oil pressure gauges but none of them EVER showed 120 psi. Start-up idle pressures were 30 psi or so, dropping to 15 or 10 as the oil got to temperature. These were old school gauges, too, not the ECU-driven liars you get today.

 

The VQ37 has a high capacity oil pump to keep the VVEL system well lubricated and the variable cam timing system responsive.

On a cold start the oil pressure can exceed 120 PSI. As the oil warms, the viscosity drops and the pressure.

This is partly why we need an oil cooler. Pumping a large volume of of oil actually puts a lot of heat into it, before it cools the engine. (ever touch the tank inlet pipe of an air compressor when it has been running for a while?)

You can't generalize oil pressure. Each engine has its own characteristic.

 

Can't make conclusions from a sample of one, either. I seriously doubt 120 psi.

 

From what I have been told in my lifetime, the size doesn't matter and its not the most important. It is the motion of the............oil.

 

Due to the VVEL and VCT systems, the VQ37 oil pump puts out a LOT of volume and that results in high oil pressure:

(1) My oil pressure is 108 PSI at 4,500 with the oil at 86C.

(2) From the staff: "Thanks a lot for this DIY Cliff, installed my guage w/ the glowshift adapter and your grounding trick. Everything worked well and thankfully my oil pressure was very strong never got below 30 and was as high as 124, w/ a cruising PSI of around 70+ at 2k rpms. I'll be taking it on a decent road trip soon so I'll have better data then."

Anyways, I am not trying to be a d*ck, I am just trying to share what I have measured on my car and seen in other VQ37s

 

And this is the first you mentioned that you measured it in your car. I can't fathom why Nissan thinks such a high pressure is a good thing, but I am much less skeptical of the actual value.
