Drive without key?

For some reason I was under the impression that the G would not shift out of Park without the key inside the car. Today I realized that isn't the case? Or is something wrong with my car?

None of the push button start cars I've ever driven lock you in park without the key. Nothing more than some annoyed beeps and a message on the dash saying the key isn't in.

Do you mean the valet key hidden in the fob or the fob itself?

You only need the key to start the car. You can start it, leave it in your garage and drive infinitely, as long as you don't shut it off. Then you're screwed without it because you can't restart the car.

Yeah I realized when a family member got in and drove my car without my permission. I guess I was confused by my remote start, cause that does kill the engine if I try to drive without the key(I think)

Think there's a limit of how far you can drive without the key fob then it'll kill the engine.

Where have you heard that? I've never heard or seen anything about that.

It would be a huge safety issue if the car just up and died after driving x amount of time or y miles. However, if you drive off without the key, shut the car down, you will not be able to restart it.

No. Think about it for a moment. A car that randomly kills the engine WHILE DRIVING is a hundred thousand lawsuits waiting to happen. The first time someone pulls out into traffic anticipating to quickly cut across traffic, only to have the engine shut off because they left the key at home, or possibly because of a failure of a sensor to properly detect a key that's present, could cause a catastrophic accident.

The car will run and drive until you shut it off even without the key.

Back when i worked as a medic our ambulances had a "security mode." You would press the button on the console and remove the key, but the truck would continue to run, but if you touched the brake pedal to shift the truck into gear without inserting the key and turning off the security button, the engine would cut out and the alarm would go off.

I can't imagine that would be a difficult modification for a car with keyless start to do if the key wasn't in range. I wonder if anyone makes such a solution. There are some situations where i would like to keep the car running during a brief stop.

Some police cars are also equipped with a hidden button to disable the shift interlock so you can't shift out of park without knowing where the secret button is located.
