Oil/Engine Questions

Hello all,

So I've read a TON of threads and now I'm probably more confused than I was before. I'm going to be pre-purchasing my oil&filter for my first change down the road and I've always used Mobil 1 W/ Wix Filter in my previous cars.

After doing some reading I've seen threads on ticking, ester oils, shearing, high temps etc. Is there anything specific I need to know about in regards to these motors? There seems to be a lot of conflicting opinions on weights, oil types etc.

I will never track the car so I would THINK sticking with a 5W-30 W/ Wix combo should still be fine.

All you need to know is in your owners manual. 5w-30 and an Infiniti oil filter

So it doesn't matter what 5W-30 I use there should be no VVEL tick that I keep reading about?

Normally I just drop off the cars off and let them deal with it but the Infiniti dealership is a ways away.

There is nothing stated in the manual for specific "brand" of oil. Make it 5W-30 and you'll have no problems. Any major manufacture will be fine. You're not beating up your car/engine.

Don't listen to that. There are differences in oil. Use Amsoil Signature series 5W-30. These motors run extra hot and a good oil can mean the difference between engine damage and a healthy running motor.

I disagree!

5w-30 is fine and gave me trouble free miles on my previous 06 G35

Almost all of the oil used was purchased on sale here.

Engine still ran like new when traded in Aug 31st 2012

Spending extra money on expensive oils is a waste of money in my opinion

Better to just use 5w-30 and change it every 3750 to 4k miles

Yeah the only thing I was concerned about was when combing through various posts I saw the following:

1. This motor runs hot(I know next to nothing about Nissan products, I come from Honda/Subaru) but hot is relative in the engine world.

2. The VVEL Ticking. I typically keep cars about 10 years so longevity is key.

Am I wrong to run 5W-20? I've got an extra jug from the QX and was just planning to use it.
