brand new 2013 G37: oil change advice for schedule 1 driving?
We just bought a brand new 2013 G37 sedan, and I'm seeking oil change advice.
Considering we primarily take short trips of less than 5 miles, I plan to follow the schedule 1 maintenance interval (ie, oil change every 3 months).
I came across this advice in "The DEFINITIVE oil thread":
PS When we bought the car 2 weeks ago, my dealership said they would do my first oil change for 19.95...but I also found out they use a synthetic blend for all oil changes. Not sure why, but I found it surprising that the dealership would use a blend.

For the first two oil changes, use conventional oil. After that, use full synthetic oil.
Curious to get any/all opinions regarding the above recommendation? They use a blend because it's cheaper and they still get to use the word synthetic. Do the first oil change with M-1 EP 5-30 and repeat every six months while under warranty and then every 5,000 miles .
Thanks hobbs. Prior to our G37, we had a G35 for 5.5 years, and averaged 8,400 miles per year.
With our G37, I'm inferring it could take 6 months for us to cover 5,000 miles. If this happens, do you see any issues if we only change our oil (with M1 EP 5w-30) at a frequency of 2 times a year?

The IS is much easier on oil than the G so every (6) months should be fine. See post #264 here; https://www.myg37.com/forums/engine-...ml#post3710567
Excellente, will do. Huge thanks for getting those tests done!
Forgot to ask:
Considering all our trips are short and that we don't rack up many miles per year, when do you recommend I do my first oil change? At 3 months? At 6 months?

I have always done the 1st oil change on a new car at 1,000 miles. Ignore the ones who say it is too early and the rings will not seat. If the rings are not seated by 500 miles, they probably never will seat.
I was thinking of stocking up on $50 of wix filters over at filter1.com; they carry the 51358 oil filter for $8.73 (and the 49362 engine air filter for $7.50). However, I'm wondering it's a good idea to run the wix 51358 oil filter for 6 months at a time?
Do you suggest I go with the "Mobil 1 M1-108 Extended Performance Oil Filter", instead? I noticed amazon currently has it for ~$13.
Or, if you recommend something other than the above 2 oil filters for my 2013 G37 Sedan, please share your thoughts. Thanks!
UPDATE: FWIW, I just compared RockAuto's prices to filter1's; RockAuto is even cheaper.

Okay so I've heard many mixed opinions about this. I just got my 2014 q60 (g37x) a couple months ago and have 2k miles on it so far. I just bought some RP 5w-30 full synthetic, and id like to switch to that at 3k or so. I'm positive I am running on Dino oil right now because the dealer I went to is cheap and even had the nerve to fill my car up with 89 fuel instead of 93 when I picked up for delivery. So my concern is will I be okay switching to synthetic at 3k or what???

I think it's a good idea to change your first oil sooner than later. I can't comment on the notion of using dino oil for the first xxxx-miles either, but I know there's nothing wrong with using dino oil in 3k miles increments.
It's probably more important to get the fist oil change done sooner, so to avoid the argument of dino vs synthetic, do an oil change now with cheap oil.
