^^^ Yes you can do that. Synthetic and conventional oils can be mixed, thus how some companies sell synthetic blends. You'll be fine.

Is anyone trying the new Pennzoil Ultra in their VQ37? A guy on BITOG has
already sent a VOA in for analysis. As soon as he posts it, I'll put the
numbers up here. The oil Guru's are estimating it's 35% PAO and 15% Ester.
It should work great in the VQ 37. Under $7/quart at Walmart.

Quick question. Is the Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40 better than the 5W-30?

Thanks!

Kwang, I want to be helpful and give you a helpful/useful answer, but
it's complex rather than a "yes" or "No" question.

It depends on the application. If a manufacturer specifies 5w-30 for
a given application, then the 5w-30 is better, If 0w40 is specified
then that's what is best for that application.

Since a 5 weight oil flows down to below -40, there would be
very few applications requiring less than a 5 weight oil at the
low end.

Many modern oil blends/formulations that are 30 weight on the
high end lubricate better than older 40 weights did a few years
ago because of the additives and refining techniques now used
to produce very specific molecular "chains"

In general newer engines are built with tighter tolerences, and
lower weight oils flow to the parts quicker when the
engine is cold and provide less internal resistence, more
power and better mileage than a heavier weight oil.

Heavier weight oils are called for in engines with less-tight
tolerences between moving parts and higher temperature
climates and operating temperatures. Hope this helps.

Jon...thanks for the heads up about Pennzoil Ultra....it's so new that it's not even on Pennzoil's website yet!!! That's kinda embarrassing ha ha. Should be interesting with a good percentage of PAO/ester. Likely the next oil for my G37.

Picked up 5 quarts of Pennzoil Ultra at the local Walmart. $28. It'll be the first oil change for my '09 g37 sedan.

So if you do do your own oil change, all you have to do is keep the receipt in order to not void the warranty?

You keep the receipts for the oil and filter, log the mileage at which you changed the oil and date it. Keeping accurate records that you went above and beyond to do everything correct, and from a post a long time ago, Infiniti will honor the warranty.

Just went to the local Walmart and asked about the PU as part of the premium oil change package, listed at $55. They have it in stock, right next to the PP. They do not charge any premium for the PU compared to other synthetics, but will charge a couple bucks to upgrade from the mid-grade Fram oil filter to the top grade one.

Normally I change my own oil, but since this will be my first oil change, I thought I'd watch them do it and learn. I'm going to get a drain plug/valve ahead of time if I can find one for the G, otherwise I'll need to go to Infiniti parts to get a washer for the existing plug. I doubt Wally Mart will have one or know it is needed.

Hookedoncars2, Good info' ...thanks, I never thought about just going to
good old Walmart every three months to get the oil changed in my G....
that oughta make the "stealerships" take notice and rethink their
$130 oil changes.

In regards to your plug washer. I personally use those things over and over and
over...as long as they look "OK" and are not over torqued, and there is no
appearant damage, they should be reuseable, but I can understand that
some folks just want to play it safe and replace them everytime.

Do you plan to do a UOA and share it with the rest of us????....hope so.

VOA on new PU

Here's a link to the first Virgin Oil Analysis (VOA) I've seen on
the new PU (Pennzoil Ultra). Stout stuff that should really
take some heat...check out the flashpoint.

Woah... looks like we found a keeper for the non-ultra-premium oil users.

Time will tell =D

I probably will do a UOA, but not for a while. Someone will surely beat me to the punch. The PU VOA sure looks good though.

I'm curious how the PU might affect my gas mileage. My car has 850 miles on it, so it is not broken in by any means. I'm pretty sure the Nissan ester oil is in the car now, which I understand is good for the gas mileage. I averaged 26 MPG last fill up (Shell premo), 75% urban, 25% city (Florida - no snow or cold) with not too much craziness on the throttle. Tire air pressure set at 35 PSI. Pleased with the mileage so far, so I'm not expecting much improvement due to PU ... just hope it doesn't go down.

My (uneducated and uninformed) guess is it won't make a noticeable difference. But really it's impossible to tell unless you have a laboratory setting where you can hold everything else constant. There are too many other factors at play.

But either way, keep us posted on anything you notice about using the PU. I just did my G37's first oil change at home -- used the Nissan Ester Oil. I'm thinking I'll send this one in for a UOA and try something like the PU next time if I can find it (and also a UOA with that.) Especially if it's half the price.
