That is the heater core and that is exactly what it is: a "mini" radiator. Hot coolant from the engine circulates through and as air from the blower passes through the fins, you get warm air.

That unit is completely shot.

so I’m building this car as a drift build do I need to replace this unit since I no longer need ac or heat or can I simply complete the loop with coolant lines

You can just loop it from the engine side of the firewall. There is also a plastic hose coupling that goes from the engine to the firewall that I would either eliminate or replace with a metal one. This coupling has a long history of failure.

Honestly, I would just replace it. Less time consuming and your ********* won't freeze up while drifting in the winter time.

Hi Carter, as stated before that is your HEATER core.
I don't mean this in any disrespectful way however based off on the picture an my years of junkyard experience it looks like you went in with a NOTHING WILL STOP ME mentality since it's a drift car.
It also makes me question your knowledge a bit since Heater cores have been standard in vehicles for probably longer than you and I have been alive and for the most part ALL look similar.
I say this because, electronically these cars can be challenging and for the most part like to challenge the NOTHING WILL STOP ME mentality.
Good luck!
