Wider tires on stock G37S rims

Hi all,

Was wondering if it's possible to run wider rear tires on the stock G37S sedan rims? Nothing crazy, but I would like to have a little less sidewall. Would a 255/40/18 in the back be compatible with the 225/50/18 in the front? Or any other size permutation?

If I did this, would it impact handling in any discernable positive or negative way?

Thanks!

255/40 is almost 3/4" shorter than factory. The only way you should go with shorter sidewall is if you go with taller rim.

Thanks for your response. I had run a tire size calculator and saw the difference is -2.6% in diameter and wasn't sure what the acceptable cutoff was... what are acceptable differences when sizing tires? And is there any other size that would work on the stock rims?

Pretty sure people use 245/45/18 front and 275/40/18 rear on stock (7.5" front and 8.5" rear) wheels. Less than a 1% difference.

Assuming you have a RWD with staggered fitment.

You should be just OK. That 255 in the rear will be a stretch to the limit on the rim but you will be fine.

However I would personally run 235/50/18 or 245/45/18. I prefer a square setup but thats just me.

No way I'd run 275 on a 8.5" wheel. They bulge on my 9" wide wheels.

Yeah I'd agree with above. While I do indeed run 245/45 in the front and 275/40 in the rear (truly the perfect combo btw), I have aftermarket wheels that are 9" in the front and 10.5" in the rear. Significantly larger than OEM. Please don't do a 275 on the oem rear rims, I'm not sure a tech could even work that.

Its obviously not ideal to run 245 on stock 7.5" wide wheels and 275 on stock 8.5" wide wheels.

But the OP is asking about wider sizing on stock wheels. I'm assuming he realises there will be a compromise in one direction or the other.

There aren't any wider-than-stock options besides 245/45 and 275/40 that would keep ~the same diameter as stock.

You could maybe do 235/50 and 255/45 ....but that's pretty tall.

The 04-06 GTO community was stuck with a 235 wide tire on a 8" wheels in stock form. Many people ran 275s however they did bulge quite a bit. This will be fine for straight line performance but it will for sure degrade your handling capabilities.
