Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Has anyone had any success with using this act for dealerships that are blaming aftermarket parts? The reason why I'm asking is that I'm still having issues that the dealership won't fix because they claim that my aftermarket parts are causing the issues. For example, I have had issues with vibrations coming from the rear tires, they've aligned the wheels and balanced them but I was still having vibrations. I brought I back and they blamed it on the wheel spacers I had that the time. I took the spacers off and still have vibrations. Now they're blaming it on my lowering springs saying that the stiffer suspension is the issue. I know the difference between vibration and bouncing due to stiffer springs. I have had other issues like this and I'm at the point that I want to look into pursuing other options.

(Please move if this is in the wrong swction)

I don't know about the warranty act but you should have it checked out by another mechanic who can corroborate the dealers claim. Now if they denied you service because of this that is a whole different story. Have they looked for the problem before telling you that it's because of your suspension.

They haven't denied me service due to aftermarket parts, but the service manager has told me that the master mechanic that looked at my car has no patience for aftermarket parts and if he sees them he won't investigate the cause any farther.

My mechanic is the one who suggested to go this route. He was actually pretty heated when I asked him about it. His comment was "it's not about how the money you could get out of filing a claim, but it could turn into how much of the dealership you want to own". So I'm feeling out my options before going that route, especially since I would be burning a bridge with the dealership if I filed a claim.

I have to agree with the Infiniti service manager and his mechanic

Put your vehicle back to stock before you return to the dealer

Just my $.02

I'd bring it to a different dealer for a second opinion.

Are you sure it is coming from the rear wheels/tires? Have you tried getting them balanced at some place like discount tire? (or any place that can do a road-force balance)

Has anyone looked at something like an out-of-balance driveshaft? I had one of those...great fun diagnosing it. Or an out-of-true wheel?

I am sure pursuing any other avenue is going to be long and sorted. And if you didn't get it in writing - ehhhh...I dunno...it will turn into a 'he said she said' thing...

Good Luck...

Pretty much this.

You've modified your suspension and want warranty work for a component that the modifications would impact. Take it to an independent mechanic and pay out of pocket to get it fixed.

Pay to play.

A local Nissan dealer tried to deny my 6th gear grind in an 03 SE-R Spec-V I had. They said, get this, that my intake raised the power level above what the transmission could hold and that's why my grind happens.

Long story short, I did the leg work and got a lawyer friend to type up a letter. After much dragging they finally fixed my car, after 82 days. Fine by me because I had a loaner they had to pay for.

I'll take it and get a third opinion on the wheel vibration this week.

It's just frustrating because I also had vibrations when braking at high way speeds and I was told that it was because of my spacers on the from wheels and they were affecting the rotors. I find that very hard to believe. After arguing with the service manager about it he agreed to look at it again and found out that the rotors needed to be re machined, and that the spacers had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Or the latest one that is driving me up a wall... I have been having a buzzing sound coming from the drivers side dash, I have no clue what it is or how to pinpoint it even farther, they looked at it and added some insulation in a couple of places and recognized that there was a buzzing sound, but said that because I have summer tires on my car they are causing more vibrations than a OEM tire would and would suggest to revert back to Infiniti wheels and tires. I almost fell out of my chair laughing because I am on Infiniti wheels...

I don't know. It's just extremely annoying.

Every dealership has a senior mechanic that seems to always have final say on things, even over the Service Manager. It's a shame yours is so full of himself. My old Nissan dealership had this one Sr. Tech that everyone deferred to, and were afraid of. However, at my Infiniti dealership, their senior tech is a great guy, who's been really interested in the mods on my car.

You know, 30 years ago I had a brand new car with a rear vibration that took months of service visits before an outside shop pin-pointed the problem as a warped drive-shaft, after which the dealership replaced it and all was right with the world.

Don't give up, man. You know your car.
