Oil smell after short high speed bursts...

Noticed when push it a little bit for a mile or so, up to 85 or 90, and then back down to 65, and then to 30 before getting to work there is an oil smell. Its slight but in the cabin. Checked the level and its fine, just changed a few weeks ago with full synthetic. I am thinking it’s the push of the engine to higher RPM and then pressure is let off when I decelerate. I didn’t notice anything on trips earlier when the 80-90 mph jaunts are in the midst of 70 MPH crusing, e.g. interstate 77. anyone else notice this?

Maybe you had some oil spill on a crossmember or something during the oil change and it's just that burning on the exhaust, maybe??

^^ What blnewt said.

I had a burning plastic smell after coming off a highway for weeks only to find out some melted plastic, probably from a grocery bag or something, was melted onto one of my exhaust pipes.

i thought it was that when it happened a few weeks ago and i did indeed spill some while filling but its been weeks. Maybe the increased heat from pushing it brought it back but i havent smelled it before or since. gonna try one more time at 90 and then back down and see what happens..

Check your oil filter

See if you have oil on your filter... if so your PCV valve is failing. Its job is to relieve pressure from the crank and put vapor back into the engine through the intake for recombustion. If it fails oil is able to push up from the crank and coat your filter.

OK! I will definitely check and see if there is oil on the outside of the filter. Is a bad/worn PCV valve synonymous with poor gas mileage also? Thanks again!

i have the same thing happen too. i notice it when the A/C is on and windows are always closed. if i go past 5 RPMs for a few seconds, i smell a oily smell. it doesnt smell sweet so i dont think its coolant, but possibly oily or exhausty...

been to the dealer 3 times while i was under warrenty, they said of course these cars that is normal and the a/c can suck in external exhaust fumes. funny it never happens on the rental cars...

there are a bunch of other threads on "odors under heavy acceleration" i found here and on the 370z forums, i don't think anyone has successfully diagnosed/repaired the issue (unless its a plastic bag on the undercarriage which not in my case sadly). maybe it is normal for some cars?
