Grinding noise on start up

Hey everyone,

Just turned in my coupe and pick up a g37xs sedan yesterday.

Anyways, coming back from a 30 mile or so drive I pulled in the driveway, turned off the car then turned it back on minutes later and after about 2 seconds I heard a loud grinding noise, like metal against metal. I turned off the car and restarted again and the same thing happened and tried it one last time to get a better listen and it happened again. I then pulled it in the garage and turned it off and then on again put wasn't able to replicate the sound.

It happened about 2 seconds after startup and lasted for about 1 or 2 seconds each time. Clearly sounded like metal on metal.

Ofcourse I'm about 150 miles from my dealer right now. Any ideas what this could be?

O and the amount of steam this sedan produces in rain is incredible. Thought my engine was on fire yesterday, but after popping the hood I found it was just coming from the radiator and was told it was normal.

Thanks!

Can you record it? Grinding makes me think of a flexplate ring gear / starter gear disengagement problem.

Can you confirm that the oil level is where it needs to be?

What's up with the steam? My sedan doesn't product any steam. Something doesn't seem right.

My car would also produce some steam after driving in the pouring rain. The first time it happened, I thought there was something wrong with my car. It's normal though.

I have not recorded the grinding sound yet, will do that later tonight.

I did video the steam. I thought it was excessive and it happened just as I arrived home from the dealer, thought the engine was smoking for a second. I had a 11 G37x coupe prior to this that never produced steam.

Here is the vid. Its a little bit hard to see in the video but it was billowing out for several minutes.

I park my car in a garage as well which makes it easier at times to see and hear sounds, and noises but I have never seen this from my G regardless of the weather I have driven in. Sorry to say but something doesn't look right. Seems as if the steam is somewhat pressurized otherwise you would not get a steady stream such as that from one given area !!! Next time open the hood and take a look around the radiator and radiator hoses with a flash light to see if you can pinpoint where that is coming from !!! I would not just dismiss it until I found the cause. Is the radiator overfill at the proper level ???
Good Luck.

I'm on my second G37...they both produce steam after driving in rain/snow..though your's seems more significant than anything I've ever experienced. I would certainly look under the hood with a flashlight just to make sure nothing is screwed up with the radiator or attached hoses. I drove in heavy snow last night and I also had some steam coming from the grill when I pulled in the garage.
