That's only correct for X models starting in 2007. Prior to 2007, in the '04, '05 and '06 X models, the snow button does lock in 50/50 AWD up to 12 mph (and also reduces the throttle response).
Starting with the 2007 X model, the AWD lock feature of the snow button was deleted and the snow mode only reduces throttle sensitivity.

I did, it came right off the training module. I retook it just to make sure I wasn't talking out of my butt again.

It also says to disable VDC if you require maximum engine power to get unstuck. Hey wait...I always want maximum engine power

Yep. Pg 2-39 in the 2011 manual. Just says what snow mode does though. Manuals would be pretty thick if they wrote everything things do not do.
