It's all good, just a little rattling of the cage

So I ran across this today

deadspin-quote-carrot-aligned-w-bgr-2<\/title><path d="M10,3.5l3-3,3,3Z" style="fill:%23fff;stroke:%23fff"/><path d="M0,3.5H10l3-3,3,3H26" style="fill:none;stroke:%231b3a4d"/><\/svg>')}.f_branding_on.blog-group-deadspin .editor-inner.post-content .pu

Cliffs: Old Accord drove 119 highway miles from the fuel light coming on, 99 miles form the needle on E before running our of fuel completely.

UGH! Looks like all the newer cars have wonky low fuel calibrations!! Anyway, on my last tank I did the math with miles traveled on the trip odo vs. the average mpg per the computer. I traveled 340 miles and was getting 20.1 mpg. It took 16.5 at the first shut-off/click of the gas nozzle when it should have taken 16.9. I can live with a little bit of cushion in my favor.

I always filll up 'to the rim'. From the first click I could still fit about two litres in until the tank is completely full.

You're probably pumping that extra 2 liters into your evap canister...

Quick little anecdote from today.

Trip computer said this tank was about 22.3 mpg, so theoretically should get 446 miles on this tank.

Warning light came on with no range left at 358 miles on the trip odometer.

Filled the car up at 402 miles and the car took only 18.075 gallons.

So let's do some fun math. Roughly 2 gallons were left in the tank. At 22.3 mpg. that would have taken me 44 more miles. 402+44= 446 miles.

The G is kind of annoying with its fuel indication. I routinely run it 30+ miles past the gas light, and have yet to fill up more than 19 gallons in the tank. My mom's old MDX used to give a range of 30-40 miles once the gas light came on, unlike the G which says 0.

I don't get this at all. So many people posting in this thread are amazed or annoyed that this car (ALL cars) are engineered in such a way that a low fuel indicator comes in when the fuel level is low and not when the car is completely bone dry. Wouldn't having the car tell you when you are completely out of fuel be redundant, since the fact that it shuts off and refuses to start essentiallly tell you the same thing? How would it be helpful to have a light come on to tell you you're out of fuel when you car just stopped telling you you're out of fuel?

Fuel consumption rate is dynamic, not static. Cruising gingerly at 50 mph on the highway in overdrive will allow the car to go much farther on a given amount of fuel than doing smoky burnouts or top speed acceleration runs.

It's just a fuel gauge folks. It says empty when there's actually a little bit left so you don't accidentally run out easily. Fill your car back up and drive on. Happy motoring.

I was running low the other day. The Dash said I had 35 miles left, the Center Stack said zero. Weird.

Shell premium fuel

I've been running my '09 G coupe (about 35k on it) on Shell Premium since about August and the math on the fuel used versus indicated range remaining versus the needle, things seem to be agreeing better.

There's a Shell YouTube video giving a demo of how well their fuel cleans. And since I work in auto advertising, I am familiar with the screening process they must have gone through to approve the video and test results for public consumption, so I have to believe their claim and it is working.

As an aside, there is another video out there about a higher level of Techron fuel system cleaner (forget what they call it) and the independent technician featured says this stuff helps clean up deposits on the sending units.
