Crash Test Dummy

Well folks, my new (to me, bought in June) G37 didn't make it through to the New Year unscathed. Was on a side street in my small city. The stop sign was about a car length before the intersection, which also was visually blocked to the right by a stone wall. After the stop I was toodling through the intersection when a guy came out of nowhere and slammed the passenger's side so hard that it pushed me up onto the opposite corner sidewalk, taking down a stop sign and a chain link fence in the process. The front of the car is demolished, probably by the stop sign pole (which was sheared off) and the fence. There actually is a hole in the hood, probably from a fence post. The passenger's side was creamed from behind the front wheel to the front door, but some crinkling goes as far back as the quarter over the rear wheel. The other guy's car hit me square on, and his late model Honda is totalled. I don't know how fast he was going, but the force to push me sideways with that much violence suggests to me at least 30 to 40mph. Fortunately neither of us had passengers, and no one was hurt. He didn't have a stop sign, so they may blame this one on me. My body guy says my car is repairable, but I almost wish it was totalled. I must say the G is one really safe car. It was surreal sliding sideways through all that stuff, and the damage actually is rather less than I might have expected considering. My front and driver's side airbags went off, I had my seatbelt on, and those bolstered sport seats kept me in one spot. My thumb is slightly sore (probably from poking around to get the seat belt released) that's it. Since I also lost a leg 6 years ago in a motocycle accident (guy decided to turn into his driveway in front of me) my wife has decided she is going to paint some X's on me and rent me out as a crash test dummy. I wonder how much it pays?

Ouch, sorry to hear and glad you made it out without injury. Do you have pics as yet of the damage?

Yes, ouch is right! Glad you're alright and it's another example of how well the passive safety systems in the G37 function.

Don'y worry too much about the repair. The FM platform in the G37 is very strong and new body panels and parts will restore it to glory.

Thank for the good wishes folks. I only took a couple of poor cell phone photos at the site but went back the next day with a camera for area shots (the stop sign was still over the broken fence) and took some of the car at the body shop. I figure I'll need these for a likely insurance appeal. Unfortunately I can;t seem to figure out how to embed any of them in this message. My body shop guy is pretty confident he can make it right. I hope so. Maybe the front will now be pristine and without rock chips long enough that I can get a clear bra put on.

"Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm"

Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The car had smashed so hard

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
