GPS Updateing

I got an e-mail in January of this year from Navteq offering to upgrade my G sedans gps for $199.. I didn't feel I needed to do it yet so I passed. March rolls around and I get a new special offer from Navteq for the upgrade for $150. this time. You'll never guess who I got an e-mail from today, yep it's Navteq again. This time the price is $99. so I figure if I hold off for another 8 months or so they will be offering me some cash to upgrade my gps. I see a trend here.

Kinda sad that Garmin offers free updates on their $200 GPS, yet we have to pay $99+ for upgrades on our 40K+ Infiniti GPS.

Once you pay for the Navteq upgrade, you have to pay the dealer to do the install. Apparently, they are the only ones that can do it. So tack on another $100 or so. Navteq = Money Pit

Agreed -- my stealership said it'd be $100 to do the upgrade ..

So, $200 for a silly map upgrade?

For what my navi is required to do in terms of my needs, it's still ok.

The POI's suck... they always have, and searching is abysmal... not at all intuitive like Garmins...

I have my Android phone .. I use that to identify POI's addresses, and then subsequently input the address into the G's navi... all good.

^ I pretty much do the same thing.

Having been in the military I know the importance of up to date maps though. I just keep reminding myself this isn't Iraq lol.

I just use the Nav system on my Android and Google finds it for me a lot easier that that expensive Infiniti nav. How it works, you say: Navigate to Wal-mart in Oshkosh and it give you turn by turn directions! Forget all that fumbling to get anywhere. The Inf nav is good for getting home...that's it!

I would only do an upgrade if the streets and/or highways changed significantly in my region.

I seem to recall that Garmin "purchased" Navtech..... I was also in PA the last 5 days and yes, my Android based Droid X worked just fine with it's turn by turn GPS directions.

Kev..

I asked my service tech about it, and he said to skip it unless I was in real estate or some other similar profession where I really counted on having up to date maps.
