Windshield Problems (Rocks)

Does anyone know what the windshield is made from? Aside from, just "glass"...? I've never had such a hard time with glass chipping from rocks, so easily. You guys remember when I had to replace my windshield on the car from a rock hitting it while on the freeway? Well, this time around, going 65 mph, again...the windshield got hit with a small rock; it didn't break, but it left a pretty good size chip/indentation. I'm a stiffler when it comes to OEM products, so when I previously swapped out the windshield, I had the dealer replace it with an OEM windshield. This new OEM windshield that I put in, now has another rock chip in it. I'm looking for a scapegoat, but I'm not sure if I can blame a chip from glass that's too soft, on the dealership or Infiniti. Advise? Thoughts? SOL...?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Good info here... OEM should be fine it's made to the same spec as dealer glass, thing is Rocks beat Glass... nothing you can do about that, however you can get it repaired vs replaced.

Doesn't sound like Infiniti or the dealer are at fault here. The safety glass that makes up your windshield uses sandwiched layers of glass to provide greater resistance to intrusion. But the outer layer is still glass and you were simply unlucky enough to catch rocks in two different windshields. If the chip isn't too big, you can have a windshield repair shop use a resin to help stabilize the crack. Otherwise, that's just the way it is.

My car has only 350 miles on it and the windshield has many small chips all over it. My 2008 G35 was not the same way.

I have over a dozen chips out of mine from the last couple weeks. Sigh.

I think we have cheap windshields, which also contributes to the road/wind noise I see mentioned here from time to time. Some windshields chip easier than others, and our seems to fit that description. I got a small chip in the glass after 1 week and 250 miles of ownership.

I disagree. My windshield was hit several times by small rocks but no chip / crack / indentation. There was a mark on the windshield each incident, but I was able to wipe it off using a Micro Fiber towel. No windshield damage.

I have several pits and one chip (that I had resin repaired), not sure if it's below average for vehicles in this price range but I'm guessing it's on par w/ others. It seems to really come down to luck and the type of gravel that hits the glass. I've had what seemed like significant rocks hit the glass w/out leaving a chip and the one that did chip the glass seemed minor at the time. Seems like every little pebble that hits the body leaves a nice big chip though, and that's what really pisses me off!

Whether they're cheap or not, I agree these windshields are very sensative and delicate. This is the second recent Japanese car that I've noticed this with. My prior Subaru would crack or pit at the slighest hit. The first time I replaced it with OEM and it cracked a few months later (was repaired but then the same crack opened up about 18 months later). The second time my shop used Pinkerton which is OEM for many european car companies and it was like night and day.

My G's windshield started chipping the second week I had it and it now looks sandblasted with some noticeable chips after only one year. I'm actually hoping it cracks so I can replace it.

I wonder if the glass is thinner (2 panes with the laminate in between) or a "lighter" formula that results in this sensitivity. Even a large water drop falling off a lamp post or wire makes a surprisingly loud slap.

I had a rock crack my whindshield with 2000km on the car and the window place mentioned he is seeing a lot of G37's because of their poor glass. I now have PGW glass so it should hold up.

For those who have replaced their glass, do you experience any wind noise after that? I have like 4 rock chips that was repaired. Talking about luck
