Plastic grates at base of windshield??

On my G sedan, there 4 plastic grates at the base of the windshield. The two smaller grates at the ends sit right over top the battery & brake fluid compartments. Does anyone know what these two smaller grates are for? I guess I've never paid attention to this part of the car before but I would think letting water into the battery compartment wouldn't be the best idea.

I assumed they were just finishers to make things look cleaner/more organized under the hood, but there might be a functional purpose.

Many automakers are going to these plastic covers all over the place for appearance, although there might be minimal noise/heat benefits as well.
