Update, did it again today..same type of trip. Drove a bit faster on the 65mph section...instead of setting the cruise at 65...i did more like 68 or so.

Finished the trip at an indicated 30.X.

I bet the 150lighter RWD 7AT could eeek out another 1-2 mpg.

When stating your MPG also add details like
RWD or AWD
Transmission Time 7AT or 6MT
Coupe or Sedan
I think all these things make a difference. Sedan is lighter, 7AT is more efficient (I believe), and RWD has less weight. I'm sure a RWD 7AT Sedan will probably average better fuel consumption then a AWD 7AT Coupe or RWD 6MT Coupe. (AWD doesn't have manual right?)

 

You'll be fine using 0w/30. The 0 only applies in startup conditions. When your car is at operating temperature, the viscosity of your oil is 30. Also, 'w' stands for winter, not weight.

 

The base stock for a 0W30 is 0, and of will have consequences at higher temperatures, even with the additives and formulation to be a 30 weight at operating temperature.

 

Not really - the base stock is not "0" if the oil is synthetic. The base stock for mineral oils is the lower one with upper (hot) range extended by adding viscosity modifiers. So mineral 5w30 oils is a straight 5 mineral oil base stock with additives making it behave viscosity-wise as 30-weight oil at operating temperature.

But there are no 0w30 mineral oils and 0w30 synthetic oils are actually 0w30 with no need for viscosity modifiers. This is one of the reasons synthetic oils can last longer without thinning - they have no viscosity modifiers that can get depleted over time.

Also, synthetic oils normally have lower viscosity at lower temps than comparably-marked mineral oils. So synth 5w30 flows better at startup than mineral 5w30, yet has similar viscosity at operating temps. In other words, even switching from 5w30 mineral to 5w30 synth oil has [some] benefit for cold startup.

So although there is a difference at operating temps between 0w30 and 5w30, it is very small and some 0w30 oils can have higer viscosity that some 5w30.

Additionally, you can find spec sheets for oils (e.g. Pennzoil) through due googling and compare hot viscosity of 5w30 and 0w30 offerings. There is no negative "consequences" from switching from 5w30 to 0w30. The only consequence can be lower wear, as proven by numerous used oil analyses from people who switched from 5w30 to 0w30 (e.g. Castrol Syntec 5w30 to German Castrol 0w30).

 

For city driving, after red lights, how quickly do you accelerate to the speed limit? How high do you rev your RPMS to? 3000? 4000? (this is for g37x sedan)
