I noticed that with the adaptive shift logic sporty driving will cause the trans to stay in 6th even up to 70mph when in full auto. These figures are with the cruise pegged at 74 and gentle driving in the city. With normal driving and periodic hammering I have averaged 24 mpg over 2000 miles on 87 octane during the summer. Obviously pretty happy with this.
This is nice to know that 87 octane can work and possibly improve MPG. I've always been under the impression that these cars could take no lower than premium fuel. Does it matter which gas station it is?

Exclamation beware

The use of lower octane fuel has been debated in other threads, such as this one. YMMV (literally).

Just did a 2869 mile round trip to Florida from New Jersey

It takes 4 fill ups on the way down. Started with a full tank in New Jersey

1st fill up in Ashland, Va. 300 miles 12.1 gallons at a 7 11 to refill 24.79 MPG
2nd fill up in Dillon, SC 283 miles 11.356 gallons at a Loves truck stop 24.92 MPG

3rd Fill up in Lake Mary, Ga Exit 1 just before the Florida border Hess 301 miles 12.406 gallons 24.26 MPG

4th Fill up Lake Worth, Fl Hess 321 miles 12.231 gallons 26.24 MPG

All regular 87 Octane of course. Never use anything else.

No complaints from me on MPG on my G37S

telcoman, do you notice a performance loss using 87 octane if you drive aggressively? Will Infiniti cover warranty claims if they determine 87 octane was used?

averaging 20-21 mpg using 93-,i have on occasions switched to 87(Telcoman pursuit) and gas avg went up to 22-23, so nothing dramatic and it actually seemed to run the same, though i did drive it gently when using 87, so maybe that is the key overall...

No clue how you guys are averaging over 20 in the city, that makes no sense. I drive probably 60% city and 40% highway and I'm lucky to average over 19.

300 mile highway/road trip I averaged 24.5.

Now I do have the 6MT and I'm a little bit of a lead foot at times, but I tried for an entire tank to drive like a grandma and it didn't make a huge difference. This car to me is more like 15 city/25 highway. I'm not complaining mind you, just stating my experience.

Exactly the same here. 60/40, with 19 mpg, in a gently modded 6MT.

OMG, I just remembered where I've heard your SN before. It's been nagging at me since I first saw it.

Carry on, Furlow.

7at will get you better milage than 6mt. Also G37x will get slightly worst MPG than G37 journey RWD.

Other than that turn off traction control for better mpg.

What is the logic behind this?

How many MPGs are you expecting to save by doing this and will the savings in gas account for any accident expenses that may result from said method?

'09 G37xS. I average about 19-20 MPG with 70/30 Hwy/City commute driving. I can't help but be a bit aggressive with the accelerator at times. I'm about at 100k miles so I'm about due for a set of plugs (gonna check my coils at the same time) this may help a bit on the mileage as well.

Are there also tire wear issues by doing this? I have 19s and at about $900 a set a minimal gas savings is not worth it at that point.

I'm not saying to turn off traction control wile driving in snow or icy roads. But some people have it on all the time even during the summer.
I think it can save you 2 mpgs.

I guess it all depends how you drive.

Do you have experience with this? I don't see the logic behind it at all...
