Another 6mt shifting question
Another 6mt shifting question
I know that a lot of people complain about 1st to 2nd and grinding into 5th. My question is about what is considered normal and when is it time for new syncros? If take off in first to high rpms (5k+)it feels like I'm locked out of second for a second. 3rd to 4th are a lot smoother but also they're close ratio. Even when shifting well, I can feel it distinctly go through neutral as opposed to some cars where it feels like neutral wasn't even in between the gears. is this just the normal notchiness of these transmissions or is it time for a rebuild? trans has 180k on it but mostly highway miles.
I've been driving only manuals since I got my license. I've owned the following: 01 accord, 91 300zx, 98 f150, 01 f250, 08 g37
none of these transmissions ever felt this notchy. the accord was super smooth. I drove my coworkers mazda 3 and it felt like neutral never exists, its just 1 into 2 not 1 with a delay at neutral into 2. same with a little 3 banger rental I had in scotland. super smooth transmissions. However, those two stated are the only manuals I've ever driven with less than 80k miles on them.

Properly maintained and driven, a good manual gearbox should last for the life of the car. But not changing the transmission fluid or a regular basis and trying to "speed shift" an upshift without using the clutch will quickly degrade the tranny. Also, downshifting abruptly and jamming the gearshift into a lower gear will stress the syncros and increase wear as well. Keep in mind that FWD gearboxes like the Versa are quite different than the RWD cars (Z32 or G37) and usually have a cable (rather than a straight mechanical) connection. If your Versa has 190K with good tranny maintenance on it, I wouldn't look into tearing down the tranny unless there's a specific problem with it.
My experience with my 6mt was going into 5th gear. It only did it when it was cold, once the oi l warmed up all was fine. Fortunately, the car was just 50 miles from the warranty period and Infiniti kept the car overnight and confirmed the problem. They installed a new transmission. Now I have engine problems, I posted about my oil light coming on, but no one has responded. Probably, no other people have had the timing gear gasket issue.

Appreciate your feedback. I don't drive the G much in the Winter. I have talked to a couple of shops and they won't be able to get the car in until after the holidays. I'll let you know what the final fix is.
Finally, I found a shop to take my G in. Fortunately, the only issue I had was a bad oil pressure sensor. Oil pressure is at 70 psi at start up and 30 psi after it warmed up. I never used the shop before, but they gave me a 7 page detailed inspection report. Never seen such a professional auto repair operation
