08 6mt, 5th gear slight grind

I just picked up an 08 G37 and the car is a beast. I still have to take pics and post them. I just haave a quick question and a concern. I've noticed that sometimes when I shift into 5th gear there is a slight grind and the funny thing is it doesnt happen all the time. It seems when i'm really pushing the car from stop from 1st gear when I get to 5th gear I hear a slight grind. Now I have to test it out more but I think at high rpms is when I have the grind. When I drive normal I hear no grind when going into 5th.

Anyone else have a problem like this? I've searched the forums and it seems no one else really has the same problem as me. Appreciate the help.

Its likely that its a syncro problem with 5th gear. It either will stay the same if you dont' press the issue, but could get worse overtime.

I had a similiar issue with my Genesis Coupe. Hyundai replaced the entire transmission. From what I've been told, Infiniti and Hyundai are using the same transmission builder (which worries me because I'm getting rid of that curse of a Hyundai and getting an IPL) and I'd prefer not to run into those problems again.

Is the warranty transferable for Infiniti? If so, I'd take it to the dealership and take one of them for a ride and reproduce it. I have a feeling a tranny replacment is in order for you.

Good luck.

Oh by the way. Is there a method from keeping this happening again? They will probably replace my tanny but I would like to know how to keep it from happening again.

Really, depends on the severity. In my first transmission, the 5th gear grind wasn't bad. So in granny shifting, it would shift smoothly.

After that transmission was replaced, my second one started eating up the 3rd gear syncro until it eventually blew the tranny up. It didn't matter how I shifting, it would grind severely. So it depends how bad it is, in terms if you can avoid it or not. For the 3rd gear, the day it happened, I just started shifting 1-2-4-5-6. It sucked. (Wonder why I wish to get rid of it? haha)

I wish you the best of luck in getting it replaced. Don't accept "we can't duplicate the problem".

When I granny shift it doesnt happen at all. It just when I really want to move the car in and out of gears. My question is what would you do if it were you?

Well, you have a powertrain warranty, utilize it.

If you like the car, and plan on keeping it around, it won't be much fun if you hate shifting into 5th.

If you don't beat on the transmission, it should be fine. The harder you work the synchros, the faster they tend to wear out. Once they are worn to a certain point, you'll start to get grinding when you shift gears.

Yeah, my 2nd gear synchro is iffy right now. I personally wish it would get bad enough to where I can get it warrantied and be done with the problem altogether, but if you want to make it last just shift slow and careful.
