You won't be able to tell anything about the timing gasket from a visual inspection, it's all internal. You can have a oil pressure test done but the car would have to be "out" for some time to have that done so whoever is selling I doubt they will allow the car to be gone for that long.

Here is the thread that started it all about the gasket;

As others have said, the gasket issue is very rare. The only reason so many people talk about it on the forum is because this is a concentrated collection of enthusiasts who talk about these cars on a regular basis. Plus, those unlucky enough to have it happen to them like BlackBetty have provided very detailed accounts of their experience. If it does happen, you will at least be equipped with all the info you need to take care of it.

For the most part, these cars are really reliable and will last for years requiring just routine maintenance. Tire life and gas mileage will depend a l lot on your driving style. Don't floor it at every stop light or drive like you stole it all the time and you'll do good on both. My MPG in my 2012 7AT X coupe is 21.1 like clockwork.

To me these cars are a great mix of sportiness and practicality. A few bolt ons and suspension parts will get you a car much, much nicer looking and performing than your average rice box while still being reliable and classy. What's not to like?

As far as compression test - I had one done when I got my car. I took it to a local shop and had them do a pre-purchase inspection, and on top of the normal inspection, I had them do a compression test. Everything turned out fine, but it was a big bill. The PPI was in the $200 range, and the compression test was in the $120 range. So it was a big commitment if I didn't end up buying the car. But it was worth it to me for the piece of mind, and knowing that I was going to put a supercharger on it, it was pretty important that I was starting with a healthy motor.

Everything that needs to be mentioned has been. If I can make a suggestion it would be to get a model as new as possible. It seems like almost every year that went by came small touch ups and changes to enhance the drivers experience and the reliability. That being said, I've had my '08 for about 5 months now and haven't had a single hiccup. The gas isn't the best but if you drive responsibly you can always count on over 20mpg. The tire thing should only be an issue if the alignment is off or if you drive spirited often. Just get better tires and have the rotated every 6 months or something. Its the price you pay to drive a sports car.

Thanks Gman. I figured that might be the case with the timing gasket. I think I will just have the pre purchase inspection done and call it a day. Thanks for the link btw.

Thanks Jumbo. Good to know. Like you said, if the issues does happen to plague the car I buy, I couldn't be in a better place for help/advice! this forum is awesome. and yes I couldn't agree more about the G37 being a perfect mix of sportiness and practicality. from what I've read, it sounds like everything I'm looking for and more! can't wait to close in on a deal!

Welcome to the forum and best of luck to you in your search

Our owner has two G37's, a coupe and a sedan and they've been pretty much bulletproof vehicles

As long as they are maintained properly, they will last you for many many years

Awesome! Thanks diode. Always good to hear positive feedback from G37 owners. Makes me want one even more!

Hey guys. Need your opinion. I found a Black obsidian 2008 g37s (5AT) for sale. car has 115,000km on it second owner, all services done through infiniti dealer. New pads and rotors, new tires (not even a season old) driven for one winter otherwise stored in garage. Treated like a baby. seems to be in excellent shape. Guy is asking $18,200. willing to negotiate within reason. What do you guys think? should I pursue this sale? I haven't gone to see it yet because the guy lives 4.5hrs away from me and I wanted to hear what you guys had to say about it first. what would you do in my shoes? would you take the 4.5hr drive to see it? thanks in advance.

There are better deals out there. Pre-2012, 5AT, and 4.5 hours away...I'd be looking at around $15k.

I'd also say that seems a bit high for that car.

Just as a heads up, the infotainment system was updated in 2010 to what the car currently has (as in 2015 models). The resolution is significantly better and i believe there are some additional features such as wireless bluetooth streaming. The screen in the 08 and 09 look very dated in my opinion, as that version came out in 2006.

Also, the headlights, fogs, front bumper and wheels were updated in 2011. Just a couple things to keep in mind.

Thanks guys. oddly enough, the guy had sent me a text shortly after I wrote that post saying he is on the verge of selling to someone who offered him $16,000 cash. he said if I could come up with anything higher than $16,000 in cash that the car is mine! BUT... that's a little too much to throw down all at once so I think I'll just wait it out and finance one. don't want to rush into it and just buy the first one I see. There is however another one for sale but has 140,000km on it guys asking $12,500 because of some "minor maintenance" that needs to be done to the car (small scratch on the bumper) he says its nothing major and its never been in an accident. should I just steer clear of the "as is" ads? Thanks

I had originally wanted a G35 but kept reading that people were burning through tires and brakes like there's no tomorrow. Not to mention, poor MPG with premium fuel to boot. This kind of scared me off from the G35. My question is, is the G37 coupe any better when it comes to the above mentioned issues? I've read that they do have better mpg than the 35 but was wondering if the g37 coupe burns through tires just as fast? I know I'm dealing with a sports car here. (Soft tires = short life span) and I know I will be paying a little more for oil changes but i hope to be doing my own anyway. I would love to hear what you guys think of your G37 coupes. hows the tire life span on these cars? have you found a tire that lasts? Hows the MPG for daily driving? has it been reliable? Thanks a lot. Look forward to hearing your take.
I have had a 2009 G37 Sedan for seven years now. Bought it new. Love it. In my humble opinion, tire, breaks, and gas mileage are controlled mostly by your right foot. ;-) I've gotten over 30 MPG from LA to Bishop California round trip, and much less on other occasions. :-)
Each of us has our own thoughts about MPG. Personally, I believe the only waste of gasoline is if you are burning it in a car that is no fun. For me, the G is fun.
