Anybody get terrible mpg?

I have averaged solid 20mpg for the last 8 years, slightly higher if I go out of town. Almost all of my commute is in the city, and most of it sitting in Houston rush hour both ways.

I did this experiment 2 weeks ago with mixing highway/city driving and going within 5 over the speed limit and never flooring it on a green light. I get off at 5 so I'm usually stuck in rush hour but I averaged 21.4 MPG this is with Shell's gas 93.

Normally for me I get anywhere between 15.9-17.1 MPG, I only use BP or Shell's. Tried Sunoco one week and the car was the most sluggish/lagging vehicle I've ever driven. I would say I have a somewhat aggressive style of driving nothing to extreme though. The most I can get on a full tank is 321 miles, is anyone's more or less?

I'm getting horrible MPG. But I am avg. an extra 2-3mpg on my 2015 Q60 6mt than my 2014 Q50 Sedan.

And people claim "slush boxes" get better mpg.

Avg 17-18 mpg on my coupe.
When I had the Q50 sedan, I avg 14-15 mpg.

"Data" is averaged out with the same driving habits, distance and destinations for the past 3 years. Mainly what is computed on the navi screen / ODO display

No the 2015 Q60 is the same car as the G37 Coupe.

So after a trip to St. Louis and 2 weeks of commuting to work and the gym I meticulously calculated just under 1000 miles of driving. I rode my bike to a buddies and even left for work a bit earlier just so I wouldn't be rushed and skew the numbers too much. To and from work is about 20 miles one way with mostly stop and go city driving with hills. Mind you, I accelerated as slow as I comfortably could for this entire time in a 5 speed auto and never went over 3500 RPM, even on the highway, it was kinda nice actually haha. So, I have come to:


18.1 MPG City
28.7 Highway


Maybe place an asterisk next to them since most everyone has different mods and I obviously don't have the resources like Mythbusters to really determine the exact mileage but, just by using the receipts for gallons and trip calculators, I'd say those are fairly accurate within maybe 1 MPG or less.


I have learned the best cruising speed is right at about 45-50 MPH, I assume that's where the slight throttle % it takes to maintain speed coupled with the amount of rolling and wind resistance equals the least amount of load on the engine. Any faster and the wind resistance starts to take a toll, any slower and the transmission has to keep deciding what gear it needs to be in?


In conclusion, all of my terrible gas mileage since I've had the car is, I think, solely the result of my own lead foot. I bet most of you will find that your solution is also actually, just you.

Also the 7 speed transmission would be better. I can't imagine having a 5 speed in a automatic on our cars. I have a 08 6 speed manual

Unimaginable huh? The 7 speed would be marginally better, still under 30mpg on the highway, that seems to be the absolute cap on these. Plus, the 5 speed is a proven reliability beast, its not as unbearable as you think .. The more I think about swapping in the 6 speed I have the more I think how much I'll miss the paddle shifters, I love those things for spirited driving days and don't miss the clutch AT ALL in the other 95% of my daily driving days. Hope your plastic CSC doesn't go out on ya dude..

HAHA just over the mark and it looks like you JUST filled up!! Must be nice lol. Yours is the 6 speed right? I wonder if the 7 speed makes that much more of a difference over the 6?

I actually filled up ~67 miles ago (look at trip meter on the dash) when that pic was taken. So, 2.5 gals? Yes, 6mt. Under identical conditions I'd expect the 7spd AT to do even better.

I don't have a pic, but I actually topped out about 33 mpg on that trip. It was all highway, keeping it under 70. Between Des Moines and Davenport, IA, 160 miles.

I didn't even get that exact, I just kept track of the miles driven from when the gas nozzle clicked off on the pump to when the dash said I had 25 miles remaining. I could possibly get a little better if it was a more consistent speed limit but from STL to my house it ranges from 55-75 MPH with numerous small towns in between where traffic picks up. I'll have to redo it when I go to Chicago or Dallas this summer. I REALLY want to break into the 30's on the 5AT.. High hopes maybe..

I've always been a numbers person. I get a receipt for each fill up, record the value from the trip meter, then reset. Once home, the spreadsheet gets updated. I even have a graph to go with it

Best mileage will be obtained at the lowest speed that the transmission will stay in top gear. For me, that's about 48 mph.
