Looking to transition from WRX to G37
Hello all,
My heavily modified 2002 WRX (owned for 12 years) was hit a couple weeks back and has moved into automotive afterlife. Over 300awhp and 160k miles with almost no issues and it was still running strong! I am however looking for change of pace from the AWD Turbo situation for a bit and the G cars have always interested me (Owned a modified 97' Maxima a long time ago and appreciate the VQ).
Seeing as I live in a major city I don't want anything new because it will likely see some unavoidable wear and tear. I am interested in the G37S Coupe and I am looking to spend somewhere between $17k-22k. Now, in this price range I am going to have to focus on 08/09 models with 60-80k miles it seems.
My concern is, I don't have a driveway or garage anymore to wrench on a car... so reliability is important. 08/09 models are a good 7 years old at this point and I was hoping you all could help shed some light on what kind of condition and future reliability I can expect with the car?
I know the motor and trans are good-to-go so I am more concerned about the longevity of other components and what items tend to fail around that 60-120k frame.
I did do some searching via the site and google but most posts were several years old... I was hoping by now everyone has a better grasp on reliability.
Thanks all!

We have a '08 Journey model with 78k miles. Only issue I've had is the Blue Tooth module failed and I had to have it replaced. Other than that nothing. I recently had my oil pressure tested and all is OK.
my 2008 G37 coupe journey with 81K miles has been nothing but good to me man, the ONLY thing that has gone wrong with it was it had a misfire in the 6TH cylinder but was fixed with a new ignition coil. other than that i love my G dude best car ever, all the girls love it too lol
Thanks for the input all.
I was dead set on a G37 and then I started reading more about the slave cylinder issues and that's really the only thing worrying me as an 08/09 will be out of warranty.
That being said, as I look around I am noticing that an 08\09 with 60-80k is going to run me about 18/19k. It seems I can get a 12/13 with under 40k for 23/24k. This means that for less than 5k more I get a car 4 years newer and half as many miles and can get the infinity extended warranty. Seems like a no-brainer.
I assume these cars lose value pretty quick in the first 2-3 years and then stay on a slow and steady decline there-after?
I second this paint chip is very prone, I have an 2010 Acura TSX that has fairly 1-4 chips on the bumper.. my G37 however has over 20+ on the front bumper and about 6 on the hood.. However this car performance is unmatched within the price range of 17k-24k.. Very good solid car. Heck I like it more than my Q50 that I purchased a month ago.

This should help you decide if the G37 is reliable

Also don't worry too much about the clutch slave cylinder, it isn't as bad as people say if you aren't clutch kicking and driving hard for one hour straight. There are fixes available for this issue. I'm at 63k miles on an 08 and have done multiple drag strip runs on fully OEM clutch, flywheel, and CSC/CMC. Fingers crossed still going strong!

I actually did a lot of research on this website before making this thread an never saw anything about the slave cylinder... all the complaints were about non-mechanical issues such as leather seat bubbling 08/09 steering wheel peeling, rattles, etc...
I'm confident in my own ability as a driver. I'm 29 and have been driving manual trans since 15 (learned on one). My 2002 WRX was known to have a "glass tranny" because they kept blowing up on stupid drivers dropping the clutch at 6k rpms. This was on the 180whp stock setup and I pushed over 300whp for more than 100k miles. My stock clutch lasted until 120k, and even then was barely slipping... I just changed it as a precaution. My trans was still going strong when the car was totaled at over 160k. I don't abuse my cars and I know how to drive.
This is reassuring. Thank you.
I think I am going to aim to spend a little more and pick up a 12/13 for under $25k, get the extended warranty for peace of mind, and call it a day. Just a matter of finding the right car. I'm currently living in Boston and moving to Chicago is less than 2 months so I have the benefit of searching 2 different areas (My gf has a car and we live in the city so I'm in no rush at the moment).
I switched from a 02 stage 2 wrx to an 08 journey coupe. I do miss the manual transmission at times but I cant imagine going back. I would love to own another wrx as a 2nd car in the future.
The only knock I have on the g37 is the poor gas mileage. Its been incredibly reliable for the 4 years Ive owned it. The only thing I bring it in the dealership for is lifetime oil changes.
