Another potential new owner thread - manual 2010 G37S w/ 100K

Hi all,

Been lurking the forums for quite some time now and have been extensively browsing the forum related to a purchase.

About to pull the trigger on a manual 2010 G37S with 100KM on it. I'll be scheduling a test drive hopefully sometime next week.

Based on my research, there seems to be a consensus that these cars are borderline bulletproof, but the mileage is still a bit concerning to me. While I've read the common issues from the 08s cluster peeling issues to the exhaust rattles, just curious what sort of minor/major inconveniences you guys have encountered?

Particularly, is there anything specific other than the obvious I should be looking for? Hopefully there is no major mechanical failure, but at the same time, I don't want a sonar sensor or a seat motor or something in the instrument cluster to go bad and I'm in the shop once a week lol

I appreciate any insight anyone can provide

Thx in advance!

Wow at first I thought that was 100k MILES!!! 60k is still too high for me but alot of people believe a car is just breaking in at that point. You need to go see the car in person and see how it was cared for. See if there are maintanence records. Hopefully at 60k miles the clutch is not toast. Good Luck!!!

Theres a guy that has an 09 G37 with 365,000 miles on it currently. Car should be fine at this mileage, just check for clutch issues

Thanks guys!

What worries me is that there are only records of service (I'm guessing oil changes) every 10KM starting from 30KM, so I'm concerned about whether the owner did any maintenance during the first 0-30KM.....

Just curious - I test drove a different 6MT and while cruising at approx 60-70KPH in 6th gear, I felt almost no acceleration hitting the gas. I'm saying this in comparison to cruising 5th gear in my Honda with approximately 140 torque. Of course, the RPMs are low but I assumed that with the torque, I should feel something a little more than my Honda? Just curious if this is normal or some other red flag I should be concerned about?

Dang that's a lot of miles. I just recently hit the 70k mark on my 2010.

6th gear is pretty tall, at 60-70 km/h you're only at 1600-1700 rpm. Further, these cars are rathe heavy. It will accelerate, but not quickly. The torque curve of this engine is flat between 3-5000 rpm (give or take). So at 1600 rpm, you're no where near the power band of the car.

At 100k km, I'd be worried about the concentric slave cylinder (CSC) failing. This is pretty common, the majority of 6MT owners have had this issue. Further it is expensive to fix. Do you records show that the CSC has been replaced? If not budget $800 for a ZSpeed heavy duty CSC and install, or $2000 for the works (Zspeed HD CSC, master cylinder, clutch, flywheel). The ZSpeed HD CSC is awesome (and so is Joe @ ZSpeed).

Most of the other issues on this car are simply wear and tear, or luck of the draw (in my opinion).

60k miles is nothing, they will run for 300k miles no problem with regular maitenance. The only things that will require attention are clutch\flywheel and concentric slave cylinder as previous poster mentioned. Clutch will go at around 60k miles if the car was abused or may last into 120k miles if it wasn't. OEM replacememnt will be very expensive but you can get other brand like Z1 or JWT for just a few hundred $ + labor. Flywheel can be resurfaced.

Very interesting - can't believe I missed that, thx for detailed the insight! Searching about it definitely makes me more wary about the purchase but it looks like G owners have experienced this problem ranging from 10k miles to 60k miles, so it looks like whether I purchase a lower mileage vehicle or not, I should still budget for the issue. Unfortunately, the records do not specifically state that the CSC has been replaced, though based on research, it seems ppl have luck extending the life of theirs by continually topping up/replacing with new fluid?

From what I've read, it seems that the issue comes very suddenly and that there is no real way to check whether there are signs for failure in the near future aside from a leak or low level fluid?

^ correct. CSC failure is usually a sudden onset problem. frequent fluids changes seems to help, but no guarantee. and many folks never have a problem at all. it's just a known potential weak point of our gearboxes. asides from that they are stout units - although not the smoothest on the market. if you are a manual guy, don't let the CSC issue hold you back.

Thanks for your input! I'll play around with the clutch as much as I can when I check out the car and get my mechanic to double check the fluids. I definitely want the manual but they really do seem to be a rarity

Thx for the replies!
