CPO Warranty: extends basic coverage or just powertrain?

I'm considering a used 2010 G37 from an Infiniti dealer and wanted to clarify exactly what the manufacturer CPO warranty covers because I'm getting conflicting information from the dealer and Infiniti. I've searched the forums to see if anyone had covered this but I didn't find an answer. If I missed it, please point me toward that thread.

According to Infiniti literature and a phone rep: CPO warranty extends the basic coverage of the new vehicle limited warranty (4 years/60k miles) to 6 years/100k miles from the original ISD. The brochure explicitly mentions that it's inclusive of the powertrain coverage as well ie. coverage is beyond just the powertrain.

According to two different Infiniti dealers: CPO warranty only extends the new vehicle Powertrain coverage (6 years/70k miles) to 100k miles. (There is an option to buy an Elite Extended coverage that would cover everything up to 8 years/120k miles and transferable to new owner- the infiniti brochure also lists this, no conflict there. )

As far as the basic CPO warranty- who is right? I'm inclined to believe the dealer in this instance because Infiniti's claim seems too good to be true. If there is fine print, I can't find where that is.

The new vehicle basic coverage is practically a bumper to bumper warranty (except for wear items, abuse etc). The gap between the two claims is HUGE as the new vehicle basic coverage would cover things like electrical/nav/ and motors for moonroof/seats/mirros etc which tend to be the items that break in cars like this I imagine vs. powertrain issues. But if the dealers are to be believed, then there's very little marginal value in the CPO coverage.

If it matters, the vehicle I'm considering is a 2010 G37 with 32k miles and an ISD of June 2010. (8 months, 28k miles left on new vehicle warranty). It's not currently a CPO but the dealer said they could CPO it if requested for extra $.

Thanks for your help.

Infiniti dealers have a "Elite Protection Program" booklet that lists all the components covered by the CPO warranty and the Elite Wrap option. I would go back to the dealer and ask to see this booklet so you can see what is covered and what is not. CPO covers 1,366 components and the Elite covers 1,655 components. The main components not covered by the CPO are audio/video/nav/mobile entertainment.

Yes, I did see the option for the Elite "wrap-around" coverage. But as far as the basic CPO coverage, is it just the powertrain that's covered? So Infiniti's statement that it extends the basic new car warranty is incorrect/misleading?

If it helps, here is the way Courtney from Scottsdale Infiniti explained it to me when I got my elite wrap warranty:

The original factory warranty is 48mo/60 from in-service date. The basic Certification gives you 72mo/100k from in-service date, and it can not be canceled or transferred. The basic CPO is more than a power train warranty, but is not a bumper to bumper (not an extension of the original 48mo/60k). CPO does not cover any upgraded technology such as Bose Audio, Navi, DVD, Bluetooth, back up camera, etc...The purpose for upgrading the basic CPO into the Elite "Wrap" is to give you more coverage for a longer term. The Elite Wrap can be transferred to a new owner to add value to the car or it can be canceled at any time for a pro-rated refund (no matter the reason...trading, total loss, etc). The Elite Wrap will cover all the upgraded technology.

Link to the booklet.

I had the Infiniti Elite Extended coverage warranty on my 06 G35. Even though it had expired when I had an air bag warning light repeated problem at over 130k miles, my vehicle needed a replacement wiring harness at a cost of $2400.00.

Because I had purchased the Elite warranty at the dealer, I was able to argue successfully to split the cost 3 ways between myself, the dealer, and Infiniti.
If you are planning to keep the vehicle for a long time just add the cost of the warranty to the price of the car and sleep tight.
Otherwise take the cost of the warranty place it in a bank account and hope you never need to use it.

Just my $.02
