I did a bunch of research on mesh a long time ago on a planet far, far away and looked at void ratio and airflow. Some of the mesh is small enough that it cuts off 50% of the air trying to enter the grille (vs no mesh). I believe honeycomb was actually the best depending on hole size. Just something to consider if you live in a hot climate or track the car. In my particular application, I was protecting two giant oil coolers on a turbocharged rotary so good airflow was critical.

I don't know how restrictive the stock grill is. And if you use a mesh grille that theoretically cuts airflow by 50%, that may be enough air to cool everything properly.

Pegasus Auto Racing used to have flow rates for various grille materials but it's not up on their site any longer.
