Horsepower bargains?

I saw a thread on another forum that had this post

"I gained 55whp as of today , the baseline was 256whp on that same dyno

only one question . what was the cost to get that gain ?
too much ! everyone wish to have a TT or SC but for my goal with that car wouldnt be wise unless spending a ton of money which I do not wish to spend !

the price is very much higher than a lot of people going with bolt-on because most of my mod are custom made !
lets start with some price

Custom step CAI with Oversize MAF tube = 1200 $
Oversize Throttle body = 500$
350zHR intake manifold = 150$
PPE step long tube header = 2000 $
Custom X-pipe = 800$
Custom exhaust (resonator+muffler) = 1200 $
Uprev = 800 $

Total = 6650 $

if we add dyno learning and tuning = i would say 2000 $ ( 4 or 5 time on the dyno ) "

That's $120+ per whp gained. That seems high to me? I know that the more hp you squeeze out the more expensive each additional hp becomes.

So my question to you "experts" is, what are the best hp bargins to be had on our cars?

Let the debate begin!

with all those stated mods you will probably gain no more than 50whp. for that amount of money you just noted you can already buy a supercharger kit and gain at least 120-160whp over stock. of course an F.I kit is the best bang for your buck.

I really wouldn't go all that out with N/A mods on our cars. There's so much air you can flow through a 3.7L engine without pressurizing it.

^ This. The VQ just doesn't mod well like other cars. Its almost a waste to throw money at it unless you are going to SC or TT it. It happens all the time where people spend all this money to hype up their car and are disappointed in the results, either sell the car or go FI. Why not just start there if feel the need to get more HP out of your car.

In summary, there are no HP bargans with the VQ.

$1200 CAI blows my mind, even with that big tube.

Seems like only FI will satisfy you.

what if you get an exhaust now and later SC? can you keep the exhaust or will that need to be replaced?

Cool

If you want that kind of power, sell the G and buy a 335i. For less than $300 I got 325 rwhp reliably, with zero driveability/reliability issues like add-on FI systems. Stealth all the way too, surprised quite a few Mustangs and such. The G motor is already in a very high state of tune; this isn't the 1980s when you could add an air filter, muffler and flexible fan then gain 20% in hp.

I'm relatively new to the G but have done mild mods to multiple vehicles (including my 05 Mustang GT convert that I currently have a CAI and Bama custom tune) but in reading threads, other online sites, etc., it seems like best bang for $$$ spent is simply replacing the cats with the High Flow cats $400-$500 (I've seen 12-14 whp dyno's somewhere online). Second possibly CAI, and tune 3rd best bag per $$$$$. Anyone agree/disagree?

Ive done almost all bolt on NA mods just cuz I try to get 5-6 little things to get me 1-2 hp each time. Reallistically UPREV wont get you more power, it made to make your car run at a safe/desired AF ratio but inthe process you see 1-2 hp throughout MAYBE.

ALL THESE ARE DYNO PROVEN AND MY CAR IS AT 283HP SO ITS NOT OVER INFLATED
Uprev 1-2 hp
Stillen CAI-17hp
lighter alternator pulley 0-1hp
stillen high flow cats 10hp
Stillen headers 8hp
I did a lot of other mods but I dont have the before and after dyno, so i gave you what I know.

btw, like these other people said these cars have dual intakes so theres no need for bigger mass air sensors or throttle bodies, the custom x pipe for 800 tells me someone is getting away with raping the retarded, ive seen one for 230. and id be surprised if it got 2-3 hp. CORVETTE X pipes only get 5-7 at best and these VQ cars arent made to impress on the dyno.

i inquired about a motordyne intake manifold at Z1 and the salesman said they constantly take them off after they put them on cuz they lost 7-8 hp but gained 2-3 tq which isnt worth it.

My question on the Stillen Gen 3... have you had any issues with rain getting on the filters? I know it has a shield but I don't know how effective it is. Thanks bro! Im thinking about buying one.

Hey 37hevn, I see on your signature that you list your CAI at 17hp and your and your HFC at 10hp.

That would seem to be in conflict with 1TUFG37XS opinion that you would gain more from HFC's or even Test pipes. I've even heard some say you gain little but noise from CAI's. When you dyno'd your Gen 3's were they the only change at that time?

Yes it was the only thing I did. I had it dynoed a couple months before I did it then I had them do the intake job on it and wrapped the tubes with DEI and dynoed it and got 17 gain. At that time I already had catback, highflow cats, lightweight crank pulley. If went all out and got all the na stuff i could that was worth taking a chance on. I tried dynoing my car as much as possible to see the actual gains. For the $ you can get Stillen gen 3 for 500 and high flow cats for 500 ( i didnt go with test pipes cuz i was afraid how it might sound. message me for more info i cant keep track of these forums. im trying to set people straight and believe it or not theres a lot of bs lol

as for someones "opinion" on if they give you power or not...all i can say is the results with my car. i wouldnt think it would differ much, but with mine i did a before and after and gained 8-10 hp throughout which is exactly what I wanted to see and anyone for that matter.
