I recently found a Escort Qi45 on clearance @ Best Buy for $175.(Regularly $649) I like the idea of "stealth mounting" and it has optional Laser Shifters (not included) The Laser interceptors seem to be the standard. I wonder if the LI's are compatible with the Qi45. Anyone know?

 

I noticed on both the Escort & Beltronics remote installed radar\lasar detectors that they have a GPS antenna. Any advice as to where to mount this on a G37 convertible? Could it be mounted on the dash centered and close to the window? Not a big fan of adding another antenna to the truck since the roof is not an option.

 

Passport 9500XI to me still best on the market and they keep updating the system everyweek

 

Usfbulls, the gps antenna is internal on the 9500ix. The only wire hanging out is the power source.

I do not have one of these (and have not tried it) but you should all know there is a new app that is, I believe, connected to the radar detector (bluetooth? - heck I dunno - i read about i a few days ago).

It basically reports to you - and everyone everyone else with a radar detector and the app, the locations of radar. So, in effect, you don't have just your radar-but everyone else's radar as well.

It is a really cool idea.

 

It's called Escort Live, and it's supposed to actually ship this month, but you can pre-order it now. Works with iOS and Android so far. I think it can be added to any Escort GPS-enabled RD, since the Live's Bluetooth chip is in the Smartcord, not the detector itself.

It looks like it's yet another subscription based service, with the first year included with the Live smart cord purchase. Escort hasn't yet said how much the subscription will be after the first year.

I already pay an annual fee for the Defender updates, and now I am supposed to pay *another* fee for Live? Sheesh, I feel like I am being asked for subscriptions to everything and anything any more.

This just cuts into my subscriptions for food, beer, and heat. I'm not making a decision on it until I see how well it works and what the cost will be.

 

^^This device relies on other users running a similar setup. I think initially, lack of enough samples will provide for little data. What they should do is bundle this new cord with all future rd sales (that support it), and give a 3 or 6 month trial. Wonder how much data this thing consumes too..

 

^^^ I wouldn't think it would eat too much data on your cell plan. It would be just a short bit of text with GPS coordinates and maybe the type of radar trap. It could theoretically do the same thing with a text message to the cloud without any data cap hits at all.

I agree it's going to take some time to get a decent amount of users owning one before the data becomes useful.

 

Regarding the remote or installed detectors (not the windshield mount) for Escort its the 9500ci & Beltronics the STiR Plus. Both show an external GPS antenna. Any convertible install advice?

I would think that you could mount the GPS antenna anywhere that has an unobstructed view of the sky. GPS signals will travel through glass no problem, so you can put it inside the car, too.

You *could* put it under metal, but you may get the "GPS signal lost" notice from the detector quite often. My windshield-mount 9500ix is entirely under the roof in my car, and I will occasionally get that message.

If it were me, I would put it at the base of the windshield between the defroster vents on the dash, in front of the center stereo speaker. The GPS antenna is black, and aren't all G dashes black, too? It would blend in nicely and you wouldn't notice it after a day or so.

The wire could be tucked between the dash and the glass and then run along over to the A-pillar and then down to connect to the rest of the system. I would use a credit card or similar to do the tucking in, rather than something sharp like a putty knife.

 

I did a write up on this on my convertible with the sti-r Plus which is almost exactly like the 9500ci.

You are not supposed to have any metal between the GPS and the sky. That's why most recievers are in the front dash with no metal above them. The GPS unit will fit in the A pillar no problem and have clear sight to the sky. I lock on in about 15 seconds to GPS.

 

People who write about the V1 false alarming too much don't know about / how to re-program it.
