Question New Here, Questions

Hello,

I'm new to the site (although I've been reading for some time now), I currently have a 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track Model. While it may look pretty to some (and I've done quite a bit of aftermarket work to it - primary consmetic except for ARK exhaust and AEM intake), I've come to find that after 13K miles, 3 transmissions (all warranty issues), and a number of other problems, this car proves itself to be exactly what it is, a Hyundai.

Thus, I'm looking to upgrade, and why I ask that you guys do not flame me, but rather help me out.

I'm looking to sell the Genesis (or trade it, whatever), and upgrade to a G37. Sure, motor size is smaller, but Infiniti is producing more power out of a 3.7L than Hyundai is out of a 3.8. Plus, construction of the car is much better from what I've read. I'm debating on several different things at the moment.

1. G37S manual, but since all the problems I've had with the Genesis (which I blame on Hyundai and my dealership) I am hesitant to deal with any clutch/flywheel package problems. However, I personally love to drive a stick, so its a bittersweet love here. How well does the transmission hold together in this car?

2. IPL manual/auto, same idea as above when it comes to the stick, but I'm also willing to go toward an auto if it will provide me with more reliability. I am a fan of the body kit, but debate if the 18hp and body kit rationale the 5K increase in price.

I was wondering if some of your current owners could shed some light. What are your feelings on and experiences with these 2 listed above cars (either transmissions apply, just make sure to say which you have). What are the reliability issues of the car thus far? I really don't want to get this car expecting it to hold together, and just end up with a more expensive headache that breaks down just the same as what I’m currently dealing with. I would like for this car to last me 6-7 yrs of driving (in which its driven only 8 months of the year and in a garage all winter). Any TSBs I should be overly concerned with? Any negatives about the car that happen to be common (I have tried looking over the forums and have already noted minor issues such as brake squeal, and a bit of oil consumption)?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I had an 05 that I learned to drive on and I beat on it quite a bit and it held up really well. Now I have a new 2011 and the clutch and flywheel is greatly improved and much smoother than the last one. Still just a bit finnicky but I prefer this setup knowing right where the clutch is gonna catch vs a Honda clutch.

2. I wouldn't say to go towards the IPL, they have some great body kits out there for cheaper than 5 grand, and with a grand you can add a set of intakes and HFC and gain that 18 horse back.

Personally I've heard more complaints from the 7ATs with searching for gears or rev matching properly, (my loaner car made a really bad lurch and grind noise when I shifted from 3rd to 2nd gear going 30....but I attribute that to being a loaner car. My 07 M45 I had, had ACTUAL rev matching, meaning you could downshift to 3rd gear going 60 on the highway and you wouldn't feel a thing....just a lot of beautiful noise from the back and taking off :P ) 05/06 Coupes with the REV-UP motor (the manual transmissions that had the increased HP) had some consumption issues, but I haven't heard or read anything about new models having that problem. I'd say do it and go for the 6MT. I kinda wish the torque range was a bit lower like my old coupe. It reached down to 2500 rpms vs the new HR motor starting at 3. But I also gain an extra 500 on the redline so I can't complain too much lol. Keep us posted on your decision....I'd say dump the Hyundai and pick up a 6MT G

Took an IPL Auto out last night. All I can say is, that is one beautiful car. It is a much more solid built car than the Genesis. And I think I might be in love haha

While it is very comparable in hp and displacement, everything about the car was just better designed and better constructed. I was truely pleased. The doors are solid unlike the flimsy passenger door of the genesis, the car itself was much more comfortable to sit in, it was more aesthetically pleasing from the inside and out (although I am going to be sad to lose my ARK exhaust, but the IPL has a very nice defined sound I really liked), and just the overly construction of the car was very commendable. I really do feel this is a car that 8 years from now I could still turn the key and still expect the car to be about 80% of what it was the day I bought it.

One question I have is regarding the VLSD. Has there been issues with this failing? I'm coming from a Torsen LSD in the Genesis, and have been told by other parties that the Infiniti LSD has a higher failure rate with usage. Anyone aware of this issue, or can possibly tell me otherwise? I would greatly appreciate it. The car will most likely never see winter as it will be in a garage under a car cover so that use of the LSD does not need to be counted.

One thing I do think I'll miss is the Brembo brakes, however, just means its a little cheaper to replace haha, plus, the brakes were more than sufficent to stop the car I feel.

I think however, I am more bias toward the stick now. After driving the automatic, I found it to have some real bad rev hang issues when in sport and the paddles a little late in shifts. Does this go away with time as the ECU adapts current owners?

I'm going to need a stick to compare this to, is the G37S manual a good comparison?

I think by next spring/early summer I will be joining this family here lol

Thanks

Why would anyone flame you for making such a great decision?! =) I drive a 2011 G37x Coupe A/T and I personally love the A/T. I usually drive in DS or manual. There was a slight lag between gears in manual but with a BB grounding kit and slight learning curve it was easy to master.

I would go with the manual. There have not been many major clutch/flywheel issues on the G. Maybe a few here and there and some I am sure where self inflicted.

I'm sure that may be true in terms of damage, but i know I treated my genesis like it was gold, its 2 years old, 13xxx miles, and has gone thru 3 transmissions. And I've been ever so soft. So I'm sure that can be the case, others, its manufacturer issues and I'm hoping Infiniti can revive my love for manual driving, because otherwise I'm going to go with the AT.

Automagic ftw. Haha in all seriousness, if you love driving MT then you should just get it. Down the road you're going to regret not getting the manual not because the 7AT has major issues or anything, but because it's not as engaging as the MT. But if that's not a big deal, then get the 7AT (no issues with it here).

I had an 07 M45 Sport with the 5 Speed, and although I LOOOOOVED the sound of VK motor, I still missed having my 6MT. So here I am in a new Sedan with a 6MT. I still miss a lot of the features of the M, but overall the Manual was well worth it

I doubt my G will ever sound like this

I completely agree that I worry I will miss the MT if I pass it up. However, I am concerned with the longevity of the current clutch/flywheel/transmission package that Infiniti is using. I've been reading the forums here and I've noticed a lot of issues in 2008-2009, but nothing more recent. Has this problem been solved? I understand a lot is due to the driver, but in reality, are they still dying prematurely?

x3 Agreed! ^^ Probably going to make the purchase in the spring/summer, depending on when I can either strip the mods out of the genesis or find a person who would like to buy the car as a full package.

I am still to drive a stick though...that is my goal to find one this week. Once I know which i prefer, I will be putting the genesis up for sale.

Don't get me wrong, Hyundai has made a big step forward, but in looks alone. The build of the car, is still 1/100th the quality I've seen in the G.

Question, my local dealership isn't helping communicate much through email (my only option during the day), and I was curious. If I was to order a car, how long does it take in order to get the car in?
