Door leak (inner door) - Will damage speakers
Door leak (inner door) - Will damage speakers
Most of us already know that sometimes water can get in the cabin, even with the windows all the way up. Nothing new there. But I just found out from the dealership that the sunroof is designed to leak a little. The water is drained via the A pillars into the wheel well. This drain can get blocked with debris from trees, bird droppings, etc. If the drain gets blocked you are going to have leaks in two places, inside your door and by where your feet are.
My wife noticed the leak by her feet because she felt the water drops. I noticed the other leak (inside the door) this past weekend when I replaced some blown speakers. It turns out that the inner door leak drops water right above the mid bass driver on both doors. When I pulled my blown speakers they where very rusted with rust coming out of the voice coil. So my speakers did not blow, they drowned. Now, my speakers were not the factory speakers, they stick in and out more than the ones that come with the car. So if you have the stock speakers they may not be getting wet, but you may want to check it out if you have custom speakers. The leak affected both of my doors/speakers in the same place.
I am going to have to build some sort of cover for the speakers so if the door leaks again I could deflect the water to another place where it does not fall on any electronics.
I just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

I've never had my G leak once for any reason but I can't even begin to imagine letting enough gunk build up anywhere on the car to block a designed drainage path.
If people are having problems with leaking for that reason then take better care of your car and clean it if/when something gets on it. Also not parking under trees unless there is no other option will help.
Good on OP for giving people with aftermarket speakers a heads up, but I think if people just keep their cars clean it'll solve itself

thanks for the heads up, I'll definitely keep an eye out. I try to keep my car clean, (wash every 2 weeks) But It's been raining like crazy for the past couple of months here. Guam summer = rainy season.
Just for clarification, all sunroofs are designed to catch any possible water that makes it through the seals and channel it to the front and rear of the car. There are supposed to be 4 drains (2 front and 2 rear) but as you noted if one gets blocked it may allow water to overflow into the cabin. It should be an easy fix to unblock the drains if that happens.
