Do I need a new Battery?
Do I need a new Battery?
Hey guys,
So I had to go overseas for 3 weeks here is the timeline of events. I had a friend attempt to start it every week till I got back..
Oct 25 - Car had difficulties starting but started eventually, drove around for awhile
Nov 2 - Car could not start needed to use manual key to enter, Key fob was accidentally dropped under the seat
Dec 5 - Attempted to jump start, first attempted used an 89 corolla, followed instructions in the G37 Manual, as soon as jumper cables were connected alarm went off and all accessories, lights came on. Started corolla engine let it run for few minutes, then started reving and tried to start the G37 it had a weak crank and did not start, after a few times it still did not start.
A nice man with a Jeep saw us struggling so we tried using his car to boost, this time we turned off the corolla booster car and unclamped the jumper cables.
Since that Jeep had his car already started we did not turn his car engine off before clamping the cables (is this very bad?? all instructions say to make sure the booster car engine is not running, or is it a safety thing?)
In any case the car did not start, and behaved the same way as the corolla.
Is the battery completely dead? Should I purchase a new aftermarket one?
The car is 2008 with 3500miles purchased around Sept of 2008 and mainly used as a weekend car. I never had problems with starting until a year later.. Winter is here so the weather is 0-5degrees. I guess I should have disconnected the battery =(
Please advise
Also.. I notice this when i was reading the manual
Coupe
CAUTION
When the battery cable is removed from the battery terminal , do not close either of the front doors doors. The automatic window adjusting function will not work, and the side roof panel may be damaged.
But it has been closed a few times with the battery completely dead, what's the likelihood of damaging the side roof panel?

How hard is it remove the battery ourselves? Since I bought my car in the states I don't have road side assistance and to get it towed to the dealer 30 min away will probably cost more than just removing the battery myself and putting in an aftermarket one or getting it recharged and trying to see if it works...
Does anyone think recharging is a good idea? or should I just put in a yellowtop/redtop?
I dont see instructions on how to replace the battery in the user manual but i have BBGK installed so i hope there wont be any difficulties..

um ok so u pop off the battery cover, then there's 4 plastic snap locks u pop off with a flat head, then the u move it over and u can see it's attached to the rubber water catcher barrier thing to ur windshield, jsut slide over so that ur battery area is completely open and should be self explanatory from there
answer ur other questions, ur car should be able to jump from a corolla.. are you sure ur jumping correctly? technically u dont need the battery to jumpstart, i've jumped my car from a little dinky 4cyl too and worked fine, is ur car under 2yrs old? 1yr old? if so it's free replacement at the dealership under 1yr if it is determined battery is bad, under 2yr but over 1yr, it's prorated, but in my experience, infiniti batteries suck so bad. so i went aftermarket.
and ur side roof panel should be fine.. unless u slammed the door with the windows completely up and even so i think it's fine

the car is one year old, if i bring my old battery to the dealership without the car will they still replace it ? or do they need to see the car? I don't have infiniti road side assistance as i bought the car from the USA, and i think it will cost me a lot to tow it there...
i'm considering just getting a red top and changing it myself if it's not too hard... I do have aftermarket backup camera, escort x50 and garmin gvn53 hardwired to the car, would that need a yellow top? or will a redtop be good enough??
I live in vancouver bc and don't drive the car too much, especially in the winter ~~

i followed the instructions for jumping the car using the manual... so i'm not sure why it wouldnt work... are you sure you can jump a car without the battery? I thought the normal jumper cables don't have enough amps to jump a car which is why you need to charge it for awhile before even jumping...
100% sure u dont need the battery to be jumped. and well i think redtop is fine, yellow top is the deepcycle for like audio systems with a fair amount of kick.
well let's assume ur battery is completely dead and wont hold a charge at all...
disconnect the + - cables from the battery, hook those cables up to another car's battery and start the car, simple extension via jumper cables, guess only thing to stop is the little resistance by extension but it should be fine
so from what i remember as a kid , anyone can feel free to correct me, connect the + of dead, to + of good, then - of good , then - of bad [normally would ground it, but in ur case let's assume it's completely dead and gone] start up the good car, and start up bad car , make sure all connections are clean and good contacts, and should start up, if not then there's other problems.

Your battery is 100% covered under warranty. Jump starting didn't work because your battery may be completely or almost completely dead. If you have a multimeter you can test it yourself. Or take it to a local auto parts store and they can test it for free. It doesn't need to be in the car for this.
If it's dead, it should be replaced for free by Infiniti if you have had the car less than 24 months. It's prorated after that up to 7 years.
If you store your car for the winter, it's best to completely disconnect it prior to storage.

Since I now have four cars in the family to maintain, I bought one of these. Will do a load test and check voltage charging levels.

Anyone care to do a quick DIY with pictures to remove the battery this sounds complicated ~_~

after u open the battery compartment, u'll see little plastic pop tabs, insert a flathead and twist the flathead so that it pops out and remove, forgot i think 4, or maybe 3 of them

now once those are popped off, move the things it was connected to, over basically opening the area where the battery is

last step is i think 1 more pop tab, and then move over this last piece to completely access ur battery, it's the piece that kinda shields water from the windshield from getting into your engine bay
it's really more complicated than it sounds, i also asked for a DIY when i wanted to remove my battery, but then when i looked and messed around, it was way easier than i thought, gl!
and just fyi, optima redtop hasnt failed me yet, after 2 oem batteries from the dealer
