Which tranny do you think will suit me better?
i'm planning on selling my 2004 civic and buying a 2010 G37 sport/preminum and navi. Thing is i don't know which kind of tranny to go. I know the 370z 7 speed auto is faster than that of the 6mt but is this the same with the G37 also? By the way i live in Queens county NYC. Traffic is not bad but there are alot of traffic lights so it'll be nice if the G picks up fast from a stop. I'f i go 7AT i'd probably have to leave it in DS mode all the time and that'll decrease my mpg. Is the 7AT faster? i already understand that the 6mt is more fun.
There are a lot of different arguments out there about which one is faster. I don't have the experience to say which is TRULY faster, but from what I've seen it comes down to a VERY VERY small margin on stock 6MT vs stock 7AT. You could probably search for it and find the threads on here talking about it.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 6MT, but there are people who feel the same about the 7AT. I would just go and test drive each, and get a feel for what will suit you better. Simply having driven a MT in the past I would not say seals the deal simply b/c the clutch on the G is so much different than any other MT I've ever driven.
I know that's not really a diffinitive answer to your question(s), but hopefully it helps point you in the right direction

Have you driven the G37 yet? Going from a Civic to a G37 is a whole new experience in itself... you'll feel like you're driving a luxurious rocket.
Anyways, I've got a 7AT. I think it suits all my needs... D when cruising, DS when I'm sick of cruising, shifting when I'm bored. DS doesn't really use that much more gas... it really depends on how you drive the car. I just like the fact that I don't have to deal with traffic or driving in the city with a stickshift.
I think someone with a 7AT and 6MT should race and settle which is faster, once and for all.

I've always felt like those that have and love the 6MT have always knew that they prefer 6MT, including me.
I don't feel like you'd get as much enjoyment out of the manual if you have to ponder the question 6mt vs AT.
So IMO, 7AT might suit you better.

It's all personal preferance... I would never consider purchasing a "performance" car with an automatic. But that is just my opinion. You are the only one who can make that choice. However I will say, any people I can recall from this forum who have gotten a new g for whatever reason, made the switch to 6mt.. I don't think you will find anyone who switched to AT
it's a matter of preference. a true consumer performance car will always be more enjoyed with the manual =P esp a 6spd. That is unless the auto is a dual clutch... then shoot spend the money get the auto.
Infiniti did a pretty good job with the 7AT. w/ the paddle shifters it's a good match. It's very very smooth, silky smooth actually. However, I would say gears 1-2 seem are a little sluggish but once you're in 3rd and 4th, the differences between the 6spd and the 7at go away.
Though price the two side by side and you'll find 6speed ends up being cheaper oddly enough. (if you stack a 6spd nav tech premium vs a journey sport/premium/nav/tech) take the extra money (+some more) and buy an exhaust/intake/headers ecu tune and you'll be one quick g37.
yeah the whole 6spd vs 7AT argument is funny tho. ever since motortrend's 5 second flat, everyone else has been testing the 6spd version of the sedan... I wonder what's the deal...

I drove MT and modified AT's for decades. Both have advantages. I would not drive a Fleetwood with a MT, nor would I want a Cobra with an AT. But, I think a G, given its D, DS and M mode AT is good AT or MT. I'm currently driving a 7AT because it impressed the cr@p out of me. It's not your grand daddy's AT. That said, *personally* if my G wasn't a DD, I'd go for a MT and TT the motor.
I'd say, take a serious drive in both.
