i got my repainted / fixed for $700.
dealer wanted $400 + $300 for bumper and paint as well.

Yeah I will tell you from personal experience it is always cheaper and better in the long run to file a claim. I had a similar damage done to the same area of my "G" and my dad was a victim of these gypsies wanting to fix my rear bumper, I was not htere at the time and they took advantage of him, being of kind heart. I was livid when I saw the repair, it was horrible, worse yet I wanted to find these mother****ers and kill them for taking advantage of my dad.
Long story short, I went thru insurance and they almost did not want to cover the expense, since they do not fix other peoples bad work. Thank god I had a great insurance company and the adjuster pulled for me and he understood the circumstances, and they covered the damages done by the other party. Took the "G" to a reputable shop and got a new bumper properely painted with the right shade of Diamond Graphite.

Just go thru insurance, you'll pay more later if you decide the "patch" work was horrible, and insurance will not cover it then. Pay your deductible, it's worth it and it will help the resale value of the car.
