That's pretty good MPG! Can I ask at what RPM you change gears?

24-26 sounds pretty good!

EDIT: I know you have a manual tranny by the way!
When I hit around 28mpg I worked really hard at it. I barely used the cruise. I was in 6th gear, but would gently accelerate to about 80mph then take it out of gear to coast down hills....then at the last 10% of the hill, I'd put it back in gear and try to get some speed back to go back up hill. When there weren't any other cars around, I'd even trade speed all the way down to 60-65mph to keep the MPG meter above 20. Some of the hills were kind of steep. I hit 3000rpm at about 76mph. A sidenote, I found that if the cruise control let off the gas enough or the instant-mpg meter to hit about 40mpg on a downhill, that the hill was steep enough to put the car into neutral and not lose too much speed.

Edit - I did that trip with the windows down too

Anyhow, overall I think there's a significant difference in mileage if you drive around 65mph rather than 80mph.

That was a bit extreme....during normal highway driving I just set the cruise at around 77mph and get like 25mpg on the same route, and that's with taking it out of gear for just a few of the biggest downhills.

I live in Philly and I've been noticing one main thing on the mpg. I average 15mpg on my G37 and at first, I thought it was a ridiculous mpg, then I realized something about our stinking city. I realized that you basically had to stop at every other stoplight in out city. What kind of gas miles do you think your gonna achieve when you have to stop every 30ish second at every other stoplight? One night coming back from Atco Raceway NJ, I was averaging 21mpg on local and I realized that their every "stoplights" are like a mile apart and I didnt have to stop at every single other light either. So it came to my conclusion, that Heavy foot is part of the reason and the way your city sets its stoplight is another major factor, not to mention that it doesnt help either when the stoplights are 300-400ft apart in Philly. I see that you are from SoCal so Im guessing your local traffic sucks too.

Mpg

I just purchased the G37S automatic; when I hit the status button, the average MPG shows around 20; most of my driving is city. Is the indicator incorrect?

I was very pleasantly suprised. The MT makes such a difference though. Made the exact same trip exactly a week later in my sister's G35 Journey 5AT. Once again averaged 72mph with her cruise control on, but she was around 4,000RPM in 5th gear the whole way and therefore averaged like 23.4mpg. Which is still pretty decent, but nothing like what I got.

Should I take it to the stealership? What do you guys think the problem (if any) could be?

EDIT 1: I mean this car is supposed to get between 15-19 in the city based on driving habits! But 13.8 doesn't sound right!
I am in SoCal as well and get similar mileage when commuting. It's all the damn traffic that we have here in LA.

Coming from a guy who's s/n is CarAddict, I believe you have a heavy foot.

You should be able to get better than 13.8 mpg...unless you're one of those people who say your commute is uphill both ways.

Keep in mind that if you fuel has more ethanol it gives off less specific energy and you will typically push the pedal further to get the same power, thus using more gas. This may account for some of the variances.

I do mostly city driving as well in socal. 5 miles each way to work and back, all stop and go. I get about 17-18 mpg. I do go easy on the pedal from time to time to conserve fuel. I get about 20-21mpg combined hwy & city driving.
