Help Power Steering Pump Pulley
Power Steering Pump Pulley
Hey Everyone,
I tried googling around but couldn’t find an answer, but is it possible to replace the power steering pulley? In the mornings it has that quick repeating squeak noise when it’s cold out and eventually goes away once it warms up.
Note: it is NOT the load long lasting squeal that you normally hear from your neighbors car in the morning.
it has that sound of a bearing going out, and I seem to have pinned it down to that pulley.
I checked belt and it’s tension threshold markings and it is within spec, but on the outside right line (so barely in spec).
Any help would be appreciated.
thank you!

If you haven't already, download section ST (Steering) of the Factory Shop Manual from here. It has a section on rebuilding the pump which shows a detailed breakdown. That said,
If the squeal is coming from the pulley, check the grooves for dirt, oil, grease, debris, etc. as the belt may be slipping ever so slightly. Check the belt for any cracking or glazing. Trust me, it is easier to replace the belt (if needed) than it will be to tear down/replace the pulley/bearing/pump.
If the pump shaft bearings are on their way out that will be a more involved project- not one the average home mechanic/ DIY'er can tackle. Possible? Yes, worth the hassle? Likely not. In most cases it is easier (and likely cheaper) to just replace the pump.
I would be inclined to leave it alone unless the squeal gets worse or other issues/symptoms present.
