G37x sedan problems

Hello,

don’t often post here only my second I believe so go easy on me if I’m not in the right section,
earlier this week my G37x sedan had a check Engine light come on and shortly after was not able to exceed 2500rpm without the car jerking and shuddering. Took it to my local shop and was told the problem was able to be fixed with new timing chains new intake sprockets and tensioners installed with tax and labour about 3-3500 me not being too much of a car expert and that being a decent amount of money just wanted to get some second opinions from everyone.

thanks,

I was told everything very early And forgot some of the finer details but if it helps/makes any sense(could be saying this wrong) but he said the problem was with the second engine bank and I believe the camshaft was -15 and on bank one it was -5 and that’s what threw the code

Camshaft position sensor? Without that code, all anyone can do is guess. It could be the difference between a $3,500 repair and a $70 repair. Mechanics will typically just throw parts at the car until the problem is fixed; and they start with the most expensive 9/10 times. Too many are too concerned with making $$$ off of you to trouble shoot problems.

Me not wanting to spend 3000 also asked if it could be a sensor and was told that it was not, also I’ve been going to them for a while and they have always been trustworthy and reliable so id like to hope that that’s not the case but can’t say for sure.

I'd like to know how that was determined; especially since all of those components are behind the front motor plate and not visible...It's just very very rare for that extensive of repairs be required for the VQ.

He could very well be telling the truth but id still like to know how that was determined. Unfortunately, despite how long you've been going to that establishment, you always need to protect yourself. For reference, A co-worker of mine was charged over $400.00 for a thermostat replacement by a mechanic she trusted. I could've done the repair in 15 minutes for $20.00...
