Windshield Washer Reservoir Rattle - video and fix

Documenting my experience with a rattle originating from the windshield washer reservoir in my 2011 G37x 7AT.

This rattle is very difficult to pin down, I wouldn't have found it without direction from a member here (BeeW), as I didn't realize such a small issue could create this noise. Searching will return references to the noise but not a lot of details.

Characteristics:
  • Only audible at idle and in drive
    • Disappears in neutral/park
  • Only audible in the passenger compartment
    • Inaudible under hood or under vehicle
  • Appears to originate from passenger side of cabin
    • Sounds like coming from behind glove box or under floorboard
  • Sounds metallic in nature

Here's a video I captured of the noise. Need to turn up volume and possibly use headphones - noise starts @ 31 seconds (phone gets notification @ 1:38 so don't be surprised if loud).

Here's another video I captured looking for the noise under the hood and under the passenger floorboard. At this time I was thinking a bad catalytic converter or something loose under the vehicle

The issue stems from a failed push pin securing the neck of the windshield washer reservoir to the passenger fender. The push pin disintegrates allowing the reservoir to rattle against the fender and this isn't loud enough to be notices when under the hood due to engine noise. My assumption is the noise travels down the fender and is amplified as it reaches the cabin, bringing a metallic sound to the noise and making it appear to originate from under the passenger side floorboard.

Resolution is as simple as replacing the failed push pin with a new one. Easy correction to what might sound like an expensive issue.

Thanks so much for the incredibly detailed description of the problem and resolution.

Can I ask what size or type of pushpin do I need to use?

Thanks,
Bill

Same thing happened to mine. I replaced the pushpin with a zip tie. Some day I'll buy a bag a genuine Nissan push pins. The aftermarket ones I tried were expensive, and of poor quality.
