Most (all?) state motor vehicle codes require you to remain in drive for control reasons. You're not harming the drive train.

There is zero reason to put it in neutral idling at a light or in traffic.

If you had a manual and you were waiting a long time but no reason to on automatic unless you're just bored

Call me lazy... For most lights longer than 30 seconds it goes into N in our automatic car. I think the brake hold feature found on many newer cars is great.

Being British, we don’t like to have the bright red brake lights shining into the car behind when we stop at traffic lights on a dark evening😊
We are very considerate 👍
Thanks for the replies

I've seen countless people shift into park and then accidentally shift into reverse and back into the car behind them.

The practice seems stupid.

You'll save a tiny bit of wear on the transmission by leaving it in gear.

Every time you put it in gear, you're causing clutch packs and/or braking bands to engage.

Agreed, shifting into park is stupid. I only shift into neutral.

I still don’t see the point. Are you really that lazy that you can’t hold the brake pedal down?

^^It's a force of habit after driving mt cars for over 20 years. You don't have to see the point, you don't even have to agree. It's just another perspective.

Some drivers insist on following other cars at barely a car length distance at over 70 mph. I see that as dangerous behavior, others are fine with it. More power to them until they're involved in a chain reaction crash.
